The Ironman Training 2021 Thread

Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday I follow the bike plan TR created for me to the T. On Saturday’s based on time and courses I do ride close to what the plan says, (not doing the 7+ hour ride scheduled for laster in the block)
I am in a Master’s class 2 x a week, my plan had two more swim days, I use the workouts we have done during Masters.
Other than adding a 10 minute run after Tuesday’s TR workout I do exactly what the run program says.

I think most of us who came to triathlon from another sport do our “own thing” for that sport. For me it’s running and I’ve got the experience to generally know what works well for me and what doesn’t. Swimming I follow a different triathlon swim workout plan that I’ve tweaked a bit for me, not because I know what I’m doing but because I like to experiment. TR is what I use for the bike and I delete out all the other swim/run workouts. But I generally follow the TR bike plans pretty strictly minus some crit races and other cafe type rides with friends.

Excited for St George next weekend! Training has been derailed a bit the last month or so due to a busy work schedule but I’m just happy to be racing again.

Just got vaccine dose #2 yesterday and have been having a pretty strong reaction so hoping I feel better soon.

Hi everyone. Just a check in from me. I really hope your training is going well and your event schedule looks stable.

I’ve just finished week 3 of the HIM LV plan and I feel like I’m crushing it. I’m making a point of trying to hit every workout with quality. I’m only skipping one swim workout a week because I feel the break is better for me and luckily I can swim.

Just turned 47 and had the first Moderna jab during the week. Definitely made me a bit more tired and arm was sore for a few days but otherwise nothing too concerning.

Amazed by how much distance in the plan ifor the the pool workouts (2000m already), but grateful how much easier the run workouts are at this stage. After spending the winter training for an ultra this is to be expected I guess. Though I’m not a fast runner, this has really given me confidence to take on the full TR plan and not just follow the bike part.

Quietly confident at this early stage for IM 70.3 Weymouth in September. Want to try into a better position on the bike, but no one I want to use in the U.K. are open yet.

I’m also really enjoying That Triathlon Life on YouTube which reminds me to not take the numbers too seriously, I enjoy the process.

Have a great one guys, hope you are healthy and happy.

Good morning 2021 Ironman trainers. Question for the group: I sure like the look of Zipp 404 tubulars and some showed up at a great price in the local tri buy and sell. Do I have this right that they probably will feel a little better, probably will corner better, but will be a PITA to change during a race even though a flat is less likely? Currently running a P2 with stock clinchers. For reference I’m a middle of the middle of the pack guy and I didn’t know I had clinchers until I found out the 404’s were tubulars… Any random advice?

I’d stick with clinchers. Tubs need to be glued on which is a skill in and of itself and they seem to be fading away in terms of relevance. If you just found out that your wheels are clinchers that tells me you’re a level 3 in terms of bike mechanics. Tubs are level 12. (I’m completely making these levels up right here from my couch) Keep your eyes out for some other wheels IMO.

I’d go tubeless rather than tubular.

Thank you. I’m not handy to begin with - so level 3 might be rounding up.

@Nelson_Dechant would never, ever go glued-tubs for a race. Or anything really at this point.

Some really positive news from Denmark this weekend, they are hoping to allow international travel from June and are planning on the much bigger pride event being on the same week as IM Copenhagen

Come on Boris get Denmark on the green list.

Anyone doing the Celtman this year? I got a backfill slot so should be lining up on the 12th of June.
Side note, would appreciate any pointers, tips, advice and warnings about that or any other extreme triathlon event too!!

For reference, spent all of last year at various levels of overtraining, started this year doing middle distance base, longest rides about 2:30, brought FTP up to 243 after big drops last year (peak 265, dropped to 232). My running mileage is up to just over 30k a week, adding 1k to my long run (trail, in the hills) every week for the last 8 weeks or so as part of training for a 50 mile ultra in September. Started swimming last week and working on 3 cold open water swims a week adding distance to each swim. Im happy with where my nutrition is at, its the same recipe ive been using pretty much every ride for 12 months now and works great.

Hi all, a bit of news for all Europe and South Africa races:

We’ve taken the feedback on board and are pleased to be offering you a once-off option to decide whether you want to complete the swim at the race you are registered for. While we will continue to host all three disciplines of swim, bike and run, we understand that some athletes have had little to no swim training due to circumstances outside of their control. It will remain an individual decision for each athlete to select the best option for them based on their personal situation.

Athletes in European and South African races who select to race as bike & run athletes will continue to have an exceptional race experience but will not be eligible for age group awards and cannot qualify for IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slots. Your decision will be final, this means you cannot opt back into the swim portion on race day. Please check your race website on how the bike & run option will work as well as the FAQ before making your selection.

Anyone want to join a study on mental toughness and Ironman training?
The requirements arent that difficult. Seems Brent is having trouble finding recruits.

I’m rather disappointed in this “solution.” Just over a month ago, on 16 March, I received a reply from Ironman to my request to defer my entry into Barcelona to 2022 (which would be a second deferment as I signed up for 2020). The reply was cryptic and suggestive that they were working on a policy: “We are sorry but as of now it is not possible to process this request.”

As of yet, the pools, indoor and outdoor, are not open in Switzerland. They relaxed the restrictions recently but pools were not included. I figure I’m being soft as I don’t want to swim in Lake Zürich, which is 11ºC at the moment (and unlikely to warm much if at all soon considering the trend and forecast).

I’m not seeking a qualifying slot and was and will only be doing this IM (Barcelona) for “fun.” I do appreciate the offer from IM, but I’m not interested in doing a duathlon. No, the swim leg isn’t significant. It’s just an hour, or less, if I’ve been swimming. Excepting perhaps three swims when things seemed like they were getting better last year (1 in September and 2 in October), I haven’t been in a pool since mid-January 2020. Long ago, I moved my swim bag into the basement to stop reminding me of what I can’t do.

As of now, I have no idea when the pools may reopen. Maybe in a few weeks the outdoor pools will reopen. If they do, I suspect my local 50m will do what they did in September last year: combine two lanes and require wide circle swimming. By then, maybe the lake will have warmed up. But then again, vaccinations here in Switzerland are not going well. In a neighboring canton, a small canton, it seems all tiers are getting their shots while in mine, Zurich, a large canton, I have no idea when I’ll get an appointment.

Even if I did this event as a duathlon, I would not be hanging the finisher’s medal with my other participation awards because it’s neither a triathlon nor an Ironman.

I’m going to ask them again to defer my entry to 2022.

By the way, having traveled to Spain earlier this month, if you’re planning on traveling to a European country, even if from a Schengen country, I’m guessing there will be a testing protocol in place. For travel from Switzerland to Spain, we needed a negative PCR result of a test taken no more than 72hrs before arrival. On the return to Switzerland, we were permitted to take a rapid test, which had to be conducted no more than 48hrs before arrival (or perhaps departure, I forget). So, check whatever screening requirements may be necessary so you’re not surprised just days before.

If the swim were cancelled I’d be on board - disappointed but I get that you’re racing the event. And I understand they are probably giving what a significant portion of the customers want.

But what is this actually going to look like on race day?

Do the bike/runners start the same time as the swim, then we have to ride through them? Surely you can’t start the bike/run when the rest hit T1?

Every athlete you see you won’t know what race theyre in unless they change the bibs and you can see the bibs.

I am not sure how you all feel about racing, but this whole “method” they are implementing lately is really turning me off of racing. I enter races so I have a carrot to follow and can have fun racing the front guys and seeing where I stack up live. I want to be able to see where I am because it adds excitement to the race. I count how far back I am when I catch a glimpse of the front and do the calculus to determine if I want to race fast and loose and dictate the pace of the front, or sit back and see where the cards land. If they were able to separate the race into say, AG waves, that would be ideal because you can at least figure out where you stack up relative to the field.

I am not against rolling starts per se, but they make the race more of a time trial in terms of overall race results. It’s not racing, its just… doing it as fast as you can, but to me the race is sort of dead. By throwing all these people now into a “you don’t have to swim” thing, it makes it even worse. Who am I even racing? Is this guy even in my AG, let alone in my race?

At the end of the day, I am less inclined to sign up for races now because I might as well just do the race alone by myself and pocket 900$+whatever it will cost to stay for the 3+ days in a hotel. Like, why do I even bother entering a race when I can just do it by myself? All I miss is the medal, blowing through controlled intersections and some “free” bananas. I am not sure what I am going to do going forward, but I feel less and less inclined to race right now… which is funny, because I am pretty sure I am faster than I ever was. I’m not sure what to do if this is going to be the norm. First world problems for sure, but they are killing the competitive nature of this sport IMO.

I’m signed up to the Celtman. I’m undercooked but I tell myself there’s still time for lots of breakthrough workouts before June 12th. And the pools in Scotland have finally reopened Monday so I’ll be monopolising the 7.15pm fast lane in the local pool throughout May!

I completed Celtman in 2013 - a tough windy year for the race - before taking a triathlon break to focus on family/kids. So I can provide somewhat dated advice.

I race tubs in triathlon, some 50+ races, and they’ve been flawless. But I’m with you that I’d never ever buy tubular wheels today. It’s old tech in inevitable decline and only makes sense if you’ve got £K’s invested in race wheels sitting in the garage.

And now they aren’t doing body marking either. So even if you did have age group wave starts you wouldn’t know who was in your age group. Even with the self selected wave starts and not knowing if someone in your age group started anywhere close to when you did I still enjoyed picking them off on the bike and run, oh well, no more of that for this year…:man_shrugging:t3:
