Glad you like it and there are many variations. Amazed me that it was free hand over my old tattoo which was not that big but had to cover up some color.
Six weeks ago I got a temporary chainring tattoo:
Pro tip: don’t get drunk at the local microbrewery and ride home in the dark!
Get it inked before the scars heal!
hilarious…
I understand the meaning of all these words, but they make no sense as used in the manner below….
Good for Lionel if he has finally broken the swim code….
His youtube videos have been pretty good lately and as always entertaining. Seems like to have been humbled and bringing it full circle.
We’ll see….I remain skeptical. The one constant Lionel has is his ability to get in his own way. Two steps up, one step back.
Sometimes progress scares people and they back away from it….I know I have suffered from that in the past. I think LS would greatly benefit from a mental coach.
Yea, before the pandemic I found swim training between work and family a logistical nightmare. Nowadays it is one of the rare upsides of the pandemic. Working from home most days allows me to squeeze in two lunch break swim of about 60 mins plus another one on Saturdays. Pool access is also still limited around here, so when I go to the pool (and can get a ticket) I don’t have to deal with a crowded lane.
My two weekday swims are around 2500m and 60 mins. I focus a lot on form and technique, trying to address one or two of the many flaws in my stroke. For example, the current focus is posture / alignment and fixing my pull. This week looked like this:
Tuesday 2500
- 300 warm up mixed
- 6*50 kick w/ snorkel
- 400 easy
- 8*50 pull w/ snorkel and pull buoy
- 4*100 take out pace (2 min leave)
- 500 easy
- 200 cool down mixed
Thursday 2500m
- 300 warm up mixed
- 6*50 kick w/ snorkel
- 3*200 on 4:15
- 6*50 pull w/ snorkel and pull buoy
- 1000 easy incl. cool down
Saturday 3050m
- 300 warm up mixed
- 6*400 cruise intervals at something I think could be my IM pace
- 3*(50 perfect form sprints - 50 breast stroke)
- 200 cool down mixed
Thanks for this - really useful to see your weekly structure.
I believe swim sessions are limited here too (Cambs, UK), but I can’t be sure as only started swimming recently.
Hey @JoeX and everyone else. Solid training in the bank for the past month. Ironman Taupo 70.3 has now been cancelled so it is full focus on the Tauranga Half in January. Today was my first race pace session with good power, and speed for the full race distance. Feels good to get outside and hammer some km’s. Lots of gains to be made from here but it was a nice benchmark.
Running is going ok this year, probably better than last year. Swimming is terrible, pools still closed here and I’ve not managed any proper open water swimming yet. That is a priority to fix from now on - can’t delay any longer. Glad the Tauranga race is a saltwater swim - free buoyancy
Ironman Florida was great to watch this morning - so funny thinking you guys/gals in the northern hemisphere are winding down, and we are just finishing Build and starting to sharpen up.
Is anybody persevering with the Adaptive Training running and swimming workouts? I’m thinking of going back to Stryd’s plans - more interesting and the integrated workouts are more fun. Any opinions out there??
I was thinking on my run just now… How much has Gustaf Iden just changed the Ironman game completely?
I’m not a super follower of IM. I am just starting to follow the sport. I know he had a superb run… But was this a record run?
Sub 2:35 is incredibly impressive for an IM…regardless of the course.
Nor am I, I just happened to watch the coverage yesterday during a 2-hour TR workout.
As @Power13 said, a 2hr 35 marathon (with more in the tank) after what was reported to be a very difficult swim and a competitive bike leg, is very impressive.
The main reason I asked was that it seems more and more common for athletes to be completing the full distance in ~7h 45, which might now be the new minimum to compete for the podium.
I’m a bit late for the roll call, but here it goes anyways.
This tri off season I’m doing a running focused block that will culminate in the Seville Marathon in February. It’s going to be my first marathon, and I’m super excited about it.
After that I’ll shift focus to the three 70.3s I have on the schedule for next year
Thanks @JoeX . I’ve had quite some ups and downs as I close in on Ironman Arizona in two weeks (my first full)…
First a down… I took a couple days easy after 70.3 Arizona in mid-October. But when I started back in, I immediately felt pain in my plantar fascia. After panicking for a few days (including replacing my long run shoes), the pain went away with concentrated calf and hamstring stretching. I think that I let myself get tight after the race, which lead to the fascia pain. Fortunately, it didn’t interrupt my training much, mainly just fed some anxiety.
Second an up… My boys (7 & 9) competed in their first triathlon last Saturday. It was a special youth tri (50 yd swim, 3 mile run, 0.5 mile run) and they had a blast. It was hilarious watching the little kids try to guess whether they’d done 1 or 2 laps on the bike. And I learned that we really need to focus on transitions; my 7 year old probably lost 3 minutes trying to get socks on his wet feet.
Third a big down… Last Sunday I headed out for my second-to-last big weekend workout (planned 5:30 on the bike + 0:45 brick run). 90 minutes in, I was riding fast along our local shared-use path, when two cyclists swung into my side of the path to pass a walker right in front of my. I slammed on my brakes to avoid hitting them, and I went down hard. My helmet valiantly sacrificed itself to save me from a traumatic brain injury.
The couple who swerved called emergency services, concerned that I might have a concussion, but they just released me to go home. My bike was scratched up, but no major damage. My most significant injury was a bruised hip/bum, which bothered me for a few days. But I was able to do my Thursday long run (3 hr) with no major issues. I do have some lingering discomfort in my lower back, which I hope will resolve soon. So all in all, I feel pretty lucky.
Fourth an up… Today was my last big workout, 6 hours moving on the bike plus a 1 hour run. The ride ended up at 106 miles, ended in 90 F heat. Nevertheless, I felt good on the ride, and I think I nailed the fueling. I had 7.5 bottles of sports drink, 4 granola bars, and 5 gels, for a bit more than 90 g of carbs per hour. And I felt absolutely zero GI discomfort on the run.
Overall, I’m pretty pumped heading into my two-week taper. I feel prepared for my first full, although I recognize that it’s a long day and problems may crop up. I certainly have the fitness to finish well, now it’s all about resting up then executing on the day…
What a coincidence, no accident just near misses but I was raging yesterday that cyclists did this to me yesterday, on the road. Seems they don’t think they should stop and wait for anyone.
Glad you’re okay, your prep sounds good so you can just relax and enjoy the race right?
That’s cool, come over to the Running Thread and tell us about your training, I’m also run focussed now.
Bruh!
From the looks of the helmet, it didn’t just saved you from brain injury, it probably saved your life!
Glad it was nothing major!
