October week 1 - 6 total hours of training during a cycling testing week. 20 second, 1 minute, 5 minute, and 20 minute tests completed that week. No running/swimming.
October week 2 - 14:25 total hours of training. 7:20 cycling, 2 hours swimming, 5 hours running. 30 min x 2 weight training
October week 3 - 14:16 total hours of training. 6 hours cycling, 3 hours swimming, 4 hours running. 30 min x 2 weight training
October week 4 - 11:53 total hours of training. 6:45 hours cycling, 1:30 swimming, 3:40 hours running. 30 mins x 2 weight training.
Did too much running this month due to feeling fresh and good. I’m “treading water” so to speak prior to starting my plan 12/6/21 in the build-up to IM Tulsa for running and swimming, so it didn’t have any structure. Which is a bad idea for me. I push too hard in those scenarios.
Weight training - been doing heavy lifts, squats and deadlifts 5 sets x 5 “very hard” but not “max.” Shoot for leaving 2 reps in the tank per set. I’m going to drop this and start doing more mobility work. My background is in soccer, and strength training is definitely not one of my weak areas.
November goals - nothing above Z2 for swimming and running, limit running to 2 hours/week and swimming to 2 sessions/week. Working with coach on the cycling is going great.
Hi Joe. Thanks for the rollcall!
My plans for the offseason aren’t going according to plan. I’m still recovering from my (mtb) crash in August. Physical therapy has helped quite a bit, but not all the way. I have an MRI scheduled for next week so hopefully I’ll know more soon.
I’m currently doing a LV Enduro MTB training plan and am enjoying the change of pace. Adaptive Training seems to be working very well for me and has me always working at a challenging effort level but I haven’t failed any workouts. I’m trying to mix in a couple runs and some very light swimming with fins (to lessen pressure on the injured arm/shoulder) each week.
Looking ahead to next season, I’m signed up for the Maple Valley, Washington 70.3 in September. Prior to that, I’m hoping to do an Olympic Distance race in June, and the Haleakala cycling route in July. I’m tossing around the idea of putting my name in the lottery for the Leadville 100 MTB race (August) but I don’t know if I want to commit to that level of training on the off chance that I get in.
After Chattanooga October was a down month. I kept working out in all three sports and strength work 2x a week but the duration was cut substancially. I did start Sweet Spot LV II.
Yesterday I started training for the Shamrock Marathon here in Virginia Beach with the goal of a BQ spot. If i just run at the pace I kept during the long (18-21 miles) runs this summer then I will qualify by 25 minutes.
My training partner and myself will be starting with a local coach starting in January. My A races next year are Eagleman and either Augusta or North Carolina. Additionally, doing five Kinetic Multisport races and build up for the A races.
Smithfield Sprint
Kinetic Multisport Half Lake Anna
Jamestown Olympic
Colonial Beach Olympic
Patriots Olympic
Just so we are clear…I kinda hate you.
Sounds like you won’t have to worry about that secondary time cut…have a great race!!
Well to be fair I need to hit the qualifying time for the age group ahead of me which is 15 minutes slower than my current age group. And this is something is something I never thought could happen.
Hi everyone!
After a year or so of base work for races that never happened, I ended up doing something of a quick and dirty build just to shake things up a bit. The former probably merited some extra attention on my part so I think it was a solid choice, but I like ripping intervals too much to ever be that sensible for long.
I’ve been sleeping like absolute garbage for the last couple of months so it’s only a matter of time before all my hair falls out and I die. Backing off doesn’t seem to help though, so rather than sitting around feeling sorry for myself I figure I might as well try and make some progress even if it’s far from ideal.
On the bright side, this is the closest I’ve got without my flights getting cancelled, so there might be hope for a southern hemisphere race season after all! With any luck I’ll be flying out end of this month, doing my best potato impression for a week in quarantine, and then starting the whole thing over again. Thinking I’ll hit up the local short course series and a practice 70.3 in preparation for Cairns, but really I’d just be stoked to see some buddies and race again, been spending a little too much time in my own company recently
Thanks for the heads up JoeX.
Stats for October…
- Total Training Time: 52:09:03
- Total TSS: 3,498
- Swim: 6:16:30 14,686m
- Bike: 32:48:23 959.5km
- Run: 13:04:29 117.0 km
For both the run and bike, did a bit more intensity…some tempo and VO2 work on both, including long ~ 60m big gear tempo sessions on bike. Swimming took a dip as I cut back to 2x per week since last two races of year would be wetsuit legal. Did IM NC 70.3 on 10-23, and the following recovery week did four easy spins and one light run, which brought stats down a bit. Also caught a slight head cold (thankfully tested negative for Covid).
IM NC went much better than Augusta. Achieved my goal of sub 5:30. Bike was 1.6 MPH faster than Augusta, and beat my Augusta run by 23 minutes. Differences this time:
- All liquid diet (infinit nutrition and gels)…no solid food.
- Didn’t hold back as much on bike, rode harder which ironically took less stress off the run.
- Walked every aid station on the run…truly astounded by how much this helped physically (lowering heart rate) and mentally (target of ‘the next aid station’ vs ‘the finish line’). And this didn’t really impact my pace that much as I was only 4m slower than my fastest IM 70.3 run ever which was on a flatter course and had no stops.
- Much more intentional effort on staying positive; e.g., laughing at silly signs, singing along to spectators playing music, thanking spectators and volunteers, offering encouragement to other competitors, etc.
Mistakes?
- Trying Maurten gels for the first time on the run…OMG its like eating snot (not that I would know, really). Disgusting.
- Walking the last aid station in the last mile, AFTER I had started my finishing kick to the line…once I stopped the legs didn’t want to start again!
Now one more race to go this year, IM Florida 70.3…not setting any goals for this one as I’ve backed down training a bit for rest of year…just gonna enjoy it.
Thanks for reading, and thanks to others for posting their updates - it helps with motivation! Good luck everyone.
I bought one of them to try it out and had the same thoughts - - like WTF? Glad I only bought one (for $5+…
).
Hahah my brother thinks the same thing about sis gels.
I’m in maintenance mode whilst executing an overseas move. Only “A” race on the calendar at the moment is Kona 2022. Will likely ramp up training in March or April, and hope to do an EU 70.3, maybe Aix, in May or June. Have an IM Vichy registration already paid for, but will likely be too close to Kona.
Is going from zero to finishing IM Sacramento the year I turn six-oh a dumb idea? I’ve walked a sub 3-hour 13.1. I’ve got a 12m pool. The epic part of my primitive brain keeps talking louder and louder. Assuming I can register I’m thinking one and done, or maybe see where it leads me….
You should do it - even if you are one and done its a cool life experience
I have never lived life more in the moment than during an Ironman
ohh and your family will be fully convinced you have lost your mind, you might even think you have lost your mind a time or two
oh and bragging rights are forever
