Let us know the highs and lows of your last month, challenges you need help with and successes too.

Motivation, motivation

After Outlaw in July it been really hard to find motivation to carry on training, took me a couple of weeks to recover from the event itself (foot blisters were so bad) then just started to slowly ease in and picked up Covid…

Started looking at a new TR plan to keep me ticking over as have a half booked for next year. But the TRI plans seem really busy for this time of year. Stuck in a rut without knowing what to do but want to do something. A strength training plan would be helpfull at this point as well.

Signed up for The Lakesman and IM Wales in 2022.

Haven’t ran at all for about 6 months after injuring my calf.

I’ve been doing a reasonable amount of cycling this year so plan on continuing this whilst starting running again at the end of this month.

I did sign up again for another 12 months with TR but decided that their Full Distance plans are just too much intensity for me at my age and so cancelled the TR subscription and got a full refund (thanks TR).

I also use Xert, so will probably use this for my bike training until I can get outdoors again in the spring. I have a Zwift account so may get on there for some group rides over the winter months.

Oh and I better think about getting back into the pool.

Thanks @JoeX. I’m 2 weeks away from my triathlon debut at IM 70.3 Cascais-Portugal. Super excited.

I’ve also hired a coach that’s been guiding me for the last 2 weeks, and it’s been good to get out of my comfort zone. Let’s just hope I finish the event strong and with a smile on my face

You are assuming I will piss over my nice bike…
I havent done that yet…

Save it for the race - no need to run out to the garage to do it now

but you will, it washes off, however it does make your shoes smell, but it also deters drafters from getting to close

no one has time to stop for the porto potty (* during a race)

Like all elements of a race, you need to practice it in training so you can do execute on race day.:grin:

Seriously, though…for me I could never pee on the bike. I tried and tried the whole time leading up to my first IM…just could not get my bladder to cooperate. Finally about two weeks before my race I was able to piss myself on the bike and it was like patty-training celebration for a little kid (but in reverse).

So you if you’ve never done it before, it does may to practice a bit on your training rides. A quick douse of the shorts, legs and shoes takes care of any smell (at least for the remainder of the ride).

September Training/Racing:

  • Bike: 30:19:26 898.2km
  • Run: 16:12:39 142.8km
  • Swim: 8:17:10 20886m
  • Total TSS: 3785
  • Total Time: 54:49:15

As described, didn’t have the race I wanted in Augusta, terrible run. Looking back on my last four 70.3 “runs” I see times of:

  • 2016: 2:24:07
  • 2019: 2:26:18
  • 2019: 2:02:39
  • 2021: 2:29:42

Clearly I am not, nor will probably ever be, a “runner.” Just a combination of ‘walk-jog.’ I know I could benefit from a 3-6 month dedicated block to running, but love cycling too much to sacrifice that. So, will likely just continue to slog along and suffer the small cut each and every time someone passes me on the run leg lol.

Will report back after NC 70.3…who knows, maybe a miracle will happen!!!

Take care everyone.

Have you considered participating in the Slowtwitch 100 / 100 Challenge? 100 runs in 100 days…IIRC, runs must be at least 30 mins and you can double up on some days so you can have rest days and not run 100 days straight.

Usually starts in late November and runs through March. A great way to boost your run fitness during the off-season and since the minimum run is “only” 30 mins, you can keep up with your bike workouts.

Worth noting that you don’t have to do this through ST itself and can then adjust the length of your daily minimum run if you need to. But having a group of fellow participants to do the challenge with you definitely helps with the mnotivation.

I’m not a huge fan of ST anymore, but the challenge definitely helped boost my run, leading to my two fastest 70.3 run splits (and qualifying for 80.3 worlds).

I think my wife would kick me out of the house if I pee over on the bike…
since is indoor and all…
we have enough with a geriatric dog (16 yo) who can control her bladder to add a geriatric triathlete letting lose on the movie room!

Cool!

Been doing maintenance 3.5-5 hour Z2 rides on the weekends, endurance rides x 2 at 1-2 hours per week over the last month. Running 6 miles 5 times per week, one at threshold, one with some sprints, the others at Z1. Swimming twice per week, 2500m each time with Total Immersion drills making up two sets of 12x25m that distance each day.

Starting benchmark testing today on the bike, did openers yesterday. 5 min all out test today, then 30 min test tomorrow, then all-out Pmax sprints on Sunday. Can’t wait to get back into the swing of structure!

Shopping for tri-bikes

Pretty sure I’ve settled on IMFL in 2022 for my KQ attempt. Run is a little flatter than IMAZ which in my main concern. Also IMAZ has multiple loops on the bike and that just gets to be an annoying hassle I don’t want to deal with.

I’ve also got a coach now since after 16 years of self-coaching myself in endurance sports, I’ve plateaued and need something to shake things up to bring me to that next (KQ) level.

So trainerroad tri plans. Yes or no?

oh no, not again!

Thanks JoeX. I had a fairly good September leading into 70.3 Worlds in the third week.

Week 1 - 16 hours (935 TSS)
Week 2 - 14 hours 55 mins (807 TSS)
Week 3 - 13 hours 20 mins Race week for 70.3 Worlds (870 TSS)
Week 4 - 9 hours 40 mins (558 TSS)

Pretty much a easy month with 70.3 Worlds in the third week. Wanted to make sure I gave myself the best chance at having a good race in St. George of which I believe I did the best I could hope for, so really happy. My original plan was to end my season at St. George, however I was really motivated after the race to do one more and try to qualify for Worlds again in 2022. So I hoped into Oceanside 70.3 which is Oct 30th. Took a fairly easy week after Worlds and now just trying to build on my fitness from Worlds and hope to get my spot secured so I don’t have to worry about it for next year. If I don’t get it, I’m already in CdA 70.3 for 2022 for another shot. Looking for a couple of other earlier 2022 races as well.

Keep up the good work everyone!!

That’s a NO from me.

That 2:02 stands out in that bunch - what was different for that one?

Also echoing @Power13 's 100/100 suggestion. You don’t even have to do 100; I often just aim to beat the number I did the previous year.

I always mean to do those slowtwitch challenges- a couple of the swim ones look pretty helpful too. Think I’d probably have to own a treadmill to have any chance over winter though, haha!
