The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

I have the versa. But I don’t use the torpedo. I just put a regular bottle there.

@Joelrivera, I only ride in bike bibs. Trikit is only for racing.

Normal bibs on most occasions, tri shorts on tri bike outdoors and for brick workouts.

Edit:

To answer another question: +1 on the versa. Really like the mount for the head unit, wouldn’t know where to put it otherwise. No splashing, not even during refill with that little spongy valve thing. Not a fan of the hook to tie down the straw, makes it difficult to drink without breaking position, I consider going back to a short straw that I just leave unhooked. In training I just run a normal bidon in the BTA. I also use one of those profile aero bottles on the downtube and in racing I add a BTS cage, for full distance maybe even two.

After a good number of years without a bike crash, today finally I had an urgent meeting with Mr. Tarmac and he offered me a juicy double road rash hamburger.

My A race is scheduled for November (IM Cascais, full distance) but I have a C race in 3 weeks. It is not official, just 10 to 20 of us completing a 70.3 distance together.

Any thoughts about how to take the best care of the wounds and what is the typical timing to get back to the 3 sports.

It is mostly hip and shoulder and not very deep. The areas are around the size of the palm of my hand.

Basically itll depend how much skin you lost and how traumatic it was - but im not asking for pictures! :scream:

Like most injuries, dont rush back too train too quickly and take it easy. Even if you feel okay, your body still needs to focus on repairing the injury - eat and sleep well, and as required.

Im assuming youve had it washed, cleaned and dressed?

Thanks.

Yep. It was very close to the Fire dept so it was cleaned immediately. :+1:

I found some info about alginate patches and might give those a try.

I used to cover it with plastic wrapper taped down with medical tape to the surrounding good areas. No sticking to sheets and it appears to heal quicker because the wound doesn’t dry out. It looks disgusting and gives you an idea of early earth‘s primordial soup. Works great for me, but I’ve never had any issues with wounds going bad, I’d definitely suggest proper cleaning and disenfecting the area and keeping an close eye on it to make sure it’s progressing in the right direction.

My wife patched me up with medical pads and mesh wraps, after washing it with disinfectant - got all the kit from the pharmacy after showing them pics of my injuries. I had to change the pads regularly for a month or two as it was weeping.

I didnt get on the road for a couple if months but that was more psychological than physical, I had a short foray into riding trails but once I was back on the metaphorical horse I was fine.

Thanks for sharing!

I hope you are over it, both physically and emotionally.

Sometimes the later leaves more scars than the former.

Yeah it was a few years ago now, just checked my thigh and it looks like the scarring has gone

One of the benefits of being a TrainerRoad nut is that you can still train even if you dont want to be on the road :+1:

Tri shorts. The pad on bibs is fantastic on a road bike but I find the extra bulk causes numbness when I’m rotated forward on my tri bike.

I hope you are over it, both physically and emotionally.

Silvadene cream or bacitracin ointment over it until skin regrows.
Keep it out of the sun.
If there are no broken bones, it shouldn’t take much time to recover. Biking will be the easiest then running. You should take off swimming until you have regrown skin fully.

Welcome to the club.

Do you guys use any kind of “chamois cream” when riding in?
A friend said that it helps with comfort.
I dont have rash or anything while riding. It feel more like odd pressure points. He say the cream helps for that as well.

I use for all indoor rides and for outdoor activities longer than 1 hour. Assos sells a good one.

Just adding that I am supplementing collagen after the crash and reinforcing vitamin c rich foods.
I did not find any scientific evidence about the relationship between oral collagen supplementation and quality or speed of recovery of skin tissues but knowing the mechanisms around that area, it might make sense.

It seems that vitamin c needs to be present to help the body utilizing the available collagen. That does have scientific evidence.

No, most people are using it because they arent seated properly or dont have appropriate bibs on, in my opinion.

Ill use talcum powder in the summer for long runs and occasional long outdoor rides, on the feet as well.

Thats my original thought…
I get discomfort on indoor when is longer than 1hr
or mostly easy rides.
My guess is that i move less when going easy so the spots are easier to hit.

I think is time to get new bib/shorts/tri shorts.

For long course I think its best to schedule getting out of aero position, and even doing 30-60s out of the saddle, each hour. Standing is the least efficient, but in terms of comfort and holding aero over 90-180km it can be worthwhile.

I use chamois cream on longer rides when I am riding in the aero bars, or I use it more as volume increases. I think i am a regular sweater, but as it get warmer, I find sweaty, wet, tri shorts or bibs, even the dry sweaty skin tight fabric can chafe. Just another layer of protection, the pressure point isn’t same as on the road bike, but more importantly, as you add in all your training, especially brick runs, double (or even triple) workout days, chaffing occurs, no harm having some cream to help.

Nothing more pleasant than heading out for a run with chaffed thighs, hips or ass.

I was wrecked downstairs after the bike at Ironman Lanzarote last year but I didnt notice on the run - in fact I didnt find out until the next day when I woke up stuck to the bed sheets…:face_with_head_bandage:

I think that was because I stayed in aero throughout because of the strong winds.
