The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

Oh yes…
so far Ive been supper lucky on the bike. I never have chaffing issues. But thats doesnt mean i will not get them. I dont think it harms if i get cream.

Is this cream similar to Vaseline?
I use Vaseline on most of my runs to avoid nasty chaffing. It works wonderful and way cheaper than other solutions.

I’ve been using Chamois Butt’r for ever and ever - mix in the eurostyle every once in while to spice things up. I get a tub and it last for 6 months or so (again i mostly use for long rides and running) as needed.

I am sure Vaseline is fine as well, I haven’t used it in forever, I always think it will stain (but that just be a me thing). I used it on my toes/feet when running with no socks, haven’t done that in a few years now, would make a mess of my shoes.

It does stain a bit,
and it looks weird when i apply over lighter color shorts (since is super greasy)
But I can use it in hot humid Florida with great results!

Never used cream ever and do rides around 2-3 hours at least 3 times a week.

Oh what an image. :see_no_evil:

I go through bucket loads. Never used to, till I started Traditional Base HV. I use cheap cycling shorts and by using chamois cream it definitely improved my comfort during those 3:30-4hr long rides. Just kept on using the cream as a matter of habit. My ass aint complaining.

Ironman Wales 2020 officially off. Just received the email

I remember the early days of Tri when it was normal to race in Speedos (for the whole race) - I forgot to rub Vaseline on my inner thighs going into the run - by the time i crossed the finish line, I had blood running down my legs from the chaffing

PS - never used Chamios Cream

Hmm, as I was just getting optimistic for autumn too. I guess that reflects thei prediction of the post-lockdown world.

LOL, this reminds me of a “lads league” we had last season. Couple of the boys got together for a challenge - scoring points for certain local events (mostly local triathlons and running races). Whoever was bottom of the log had to compete in a Speedo at the following event. We kept changing the rules and points values to keep this one chap in the Speedo for the entire year    Was all just for good fun and banter.

Yep. Gutted.

The world is forever grateful that I didnt get into tri until long after those days :joy:

I suspect it may have engendered a feeling of freedom though…?

And did you have a ‘tache as well?

No 'tache mate

I know a guy who did his hole race (it was a sprint) on speedo, and not the jammers, the old school.

The guy is a natural beast. He had a loaner bike and he was not swimming often. He crushed mostly everyone except on the bike.
He did the 3.4 mile run (yes it was an odd distance like that :man_shrugging:) in 17:53. The second fastest person was 19 minutes!

ALL OF THAT ON A SPEEDO!
the guy is superb runner.

Whelp, just around the time I hit an all-time high for CTL I began to develop some pretty noticeable shortness of breath. I live in Minneapolis so was down at some of the protests 2 weeks ago and this was one of the things I feared. I got tested for COVID yesterday and while I’m still awaiting results, I don’t think I’ll be getting any training in anytime soon. Hopefully it’s mild and the worst thing is watching some of my fitness slip away.

Fingers crossed

Hope is nothing major!
best of luck

Faaark. Holding thumbs for ya bru. :crossed_fingers:t2:

Anyone have recommendations of outdoor drills etc. to improve bike handling especially when in aero position?

I only got into cycling last year and used a mountain bike all of last year. I bought a road bike in December and added clip on aero bars which I have been using/adapting to during indoor training, and I took it out on the road for the first time last night. 2 minutes into the ride on a flat straight stretch I decided to try out my aero position. I immediately swerved and nearly flipped, learning very quickly just how poorly I balance and how much twitchier the new bike is.

Is it just more time outdoor in the aero position? Or what did you do to improve your balance and handling?

Aerobars added to a road bike throw the balance out, adding weight and encumberance effectively to the handlebars, so its not surprising you had a bit of a wobble - I think everyone does. In fact the road rash accident I discussed a few posts up was from testing aero bars on a roadie.

If thats your first time on a roadbike in over a year Id be tempted to take them off while I got used to road riding, then add them back in.

From offroad riding youll be used to moving your body about to balance which you just cant do in aero
