The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

I’m not sure about swimming - in the UK we’re asked to social distance, but even in isolation to get out for exercise. Plus the pools are virtually empty and smothered in chlorine, probably the safest place to be for me given I can run over there dive straight in and then leave only touching two door handles! (I’ve done this in summer, running in tri gear)

Tensions are starting to run high though, and without clear rules some people will be offended if I or my kids keep swimming.

I LIKE YOUR THINKING  before both of my previous HIM I have done a “big day” 2-4 weeks out, to see how I would do and to test nutrition.

4k open water swim
change on bike (~15min)
120k bike, directly into
10k run (no longer reduce impact)

I think the full IM distance would definitely be possible without a big issue. but the mental game is better at a race!

Hubby is planning his own solo-IM if IM Canada gets cancelled. I haven’t decided if I’m that crazy yet. I might do it LCW style with one event each day.

I’m not really interested in a full distance event, but would be down for a half distance event once open water becomes acceptable. Thinking about it, a half distance at low intensity could actually be fun, we could even take a page out of the disaster playbook and dork around with discord along the way or instagram the crap out of it.

If I had to guess, Ironman hasn’t cancelled or postponed more races yet because they are waiting for the city to shut them down. That way they can collect insurance on it as they were “forced” to cancel, instead of electing to cancel.

I understand it from a financial perspective, but to leave your customers hanging on like this

The Pirates (PSOF) who i am a member, of do a DIY half nearly every year … everyone seems to enjoy it

Thanks. Not a facebook user but will keep an eye out

From what I’ve read chlorine kills it, so I’ll keep swimming, will drop the gym work at the gym and just do some at home stuff. Will also not get changed at the gym after swimming will wait till I get home (and deal with the wet shorts)

My first two 70.3’s (Hits Napa, and Santa Rosa) delayed. Was going to do a solo Self supported 70.3 the weekend of the napa one but my neighborhood pool just closed which I’m super bummed about as it seemed like the safest place other than riding on the road to workout (social distance + chlorine). Bummer, obviously lot bigger things happening, waiting to see if Couer d’alene, the third of my three first year of 70.3’s now gets moved.

I am on the hook for cda 70.3 as well. Pool is closed In GA by my house anyway and closest open water is 45 min drive.

I am pretty sure it gets moved as my bro lives in the area and he says things are interesting to say the least.

If it does I am probably going to pretty much fully dedicate myself to road cycling and sprinkle in 3 days or trail running weekly and give IM a rest for a year or so.

We could all go to CDA and keep a few minutes distance apart! :stuck_out_tongue:

But really, ugh. :frowning:

Lol. I would like to ride the bike course for sure with my new arrival on Friday. Specialized Tarmac comp with di2 and disc.

Regardless I always take a few weeks to see my parents in central Washington St during the summer so will be riding out there.

I keep telling myself I don’t need a new bike so often, ha. Blew my wheel hub up this last weekend and went to the shop today… New hub $50… New bike just two more zeroes. Math checks out.

Yeah, that course it great. Central Wa is a bit desolate for my tastes, but CDA is beautiful.

Niiiiiiiiiiice. And congrats!!! Good choice - that’s what I’d get too if I was due for my next bike.

I can’t even lie to myself like that anymore. I’ve given up. Every day I come up with new reasons to justify another bike. If only the money was there. LOL

Thanks and looking forward to it. I think at this point I ride my road bike so much w/o clip on aerobars I am more comfortable without them.

Edit: I also think my tri plans as mentioned earlier will be put on pause for at least a year if not more.

My overall plan was to build up a crap ton of speed at the Oly distance in 2020 with my A race being USAT Nationals, then shoot for a KQ in 2021 and/or 2022. I suppose I can still build the speed but bummed I probably won’t get the chance to race and see where I stand.

The thing I’m wondering about is, will all the people who were targeting a 2020 KQ attempt push that off to 2021 and will there be and even bigger cohort of people going for it then? Might 2021 be the fastest year ever in Ironman at the pointy end? It will be very interesting to see how the sport responds to this next year.

There are a lots of unanswered questions about Kona, if we even get there.

I think the best way to do it is to limit the age group slots from the normal races don’t make a single race have 100’s of slots and then fill the rest with legacy athletes because that waiting list is increasing all the time,

Ironman VR

Wow, what’s this going to be like?

Athletes will compete in the traditional age-group categories and for select virtual races, will have the opportunity to earn qualifying slots to the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand scheduled to take place on November 28 and 29, 2020. Virtual races will begin on Fridays at 6 p.m. GMT and close Sundays at midnight GMT with the first competitive race, Ironman VR1, debuting on April 3. The format and distances may vary each race weekend. The Ironman Virtual Club platform will utilize connected devices and be compatible with most wearable technology and app trackers. Upon completion of a race, athletes will receive a finisher package including the collectible Ironman VR medal and finisher tees for that race. The Ironman Virtual Club will additionally provide an activity-based loyalty point system designed to motivate athletes as they train and reward them through merchandise, discounts and special benefits.

During each weekend of competition, there will also be a Women’s and Men’s Ironman VR Pro Challenge. Two professional female athletes will compete on Saturday and two professional male athletes will compete on Sunday for prize money. Anyone around the world will be able to tune-in to the head-to-head battles through the Ironman Now Page on Facebook Watch. The coverage will also follow the competing age-group athletes through User-Generated Content shared on the interactive platform, allowing athletes to see how they match up against fellow competitors through live look-ins and leaderboard updates. Additionally, every Monday at 6 p.m. following the race weekend, the Ironman VR Rolldown Show will provide the best action from the weekend and an interactive live awarding of the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championship qualifying slots. During the live coverage, the Ironman Foundation will also run Facebook fundraisers to provide support for our traditional host communities.

Hey everyone,

Hope everyone’s keeping safe! I’ve really enjoyed keeping up with this thread while not contributing this year.

I’ve just returned to the UK 3 weeks before my contract in Sydney was finished and 3 weeks before my trip around Australia and South America started. Pretty gutted but also happy to be home with family at this time.

I’m planning to use this time to increase running and cycling volume. For running I’m going to use the BarryP 6 runs a week at low intensity to increase my volume.

Alongside this would I be better using sweetspot plans or IM plans and removing swims and runs? Plan to start with low volume and move up to medium when I’m adjusted to the TrainerRoad workouts after 6 months off them.

Thanks!
Jack
