The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

A-ha! That’s why the pool was quiet last week! It was nice having the fast lane all to myself. Not that I deserve to be in the fast lane!

My plans lie in partial ruins! I was signed up for the iconic Fred Whitton Challenge and The Marathon du Mt. Blanc this year but my race buddy has torn his meniscus and almost certainly can’t do these any more. I don’t want to do them on my own so we’re going to drop out. On the plus side, I did enter Outlaw Nottingham again to get revenge for last years partial cancellation, so I can concentrate on that (I was planning on phoning it in!) at least until it gets cancelled in the Coronapocalypse.

Speaking of which, I’ve rejigged my plan to peak at the end of July for Outlaw rather than the beginning of June for Fred. First time using Plan Builder too. I put in “mid volume” and “lots of structure” but seem to have ended up with a lot of base, a fair amount of build and a mere four weeks of specialty, which is a little puzzling as it’s quite different from the regular base/build/specialty. I suppose it’s assuming that I’m starting from scratch. I was in the mid-500s average TSS part of build when I retargeted this week and am now bumping down to a 470 average 4-week block, which seems about right I think. Anybody else using Plan Builder for their IM?

Crisis all!

Coach has put in a FTP test during the coming weeks sessions, appreciate we have discussed but will try the ramp test, partly due to technical gear issues and want to leave the Kickr in ERG mode.

Question is, in everybody’s experience is the ramp test accurate enough?

Accurate as in that it matched my 20 min test at the time, yes.

I think Scientific Triathlon is more of the opinion for long distance, the twenty minute is a better gauge.

Yeah I get that about the 20min test being a better measure!

Maybe I need to sort my bike out so I can change gears and do the 20mins!

As far as I can see it works for most but not all. Seems working well for my buddy, but doesn’t for me. On my tri bike I’m undertesting by 10-15 watts. But after three years on TR I roughly know how certain workouts should feel like and I adjust my FTP manually. If I fail the occasional workout and can identify the factors that lead to it (fatigue, tough day at work, poor nutrition) then I’m good.

All the pools and gyms have been closed for 14 days! Lets hope it does not get any colder so it is possible to run outside, and sooooo glad I invested in a proper room for my bikes with my kickr on it!
Everyone should work from home, so that means less travel and more quality training

British riders I need some help (going into this remember I am the least technically minded person you have EVER met). Last year I used these latex tubes from amazon but they appear to be out of stock everywhere what can I use as a replacement and do I need new valve extenders or will my current fit?

Is anyone at national duathlon championships at clumber park next week?

Ironman South Africa postponed until 15 November due to COVID-19

Oh no!!

Have their been any cases in SA yet? I’m a little UK focussed at the moment.

Should we just cancel this whole thread now too or what?

7 confirmed cases to my knowledge.

My pool is currently closed. I am expecting to miss out on roughly 4 weeks of swimming. As such i will not do my planned race on apr 25th. Still wondering about the june race. We actually don’t know how long this thing will last. I thankfully hadn’t signed up for anything yet.

edit not sure why the chart I was looking at said only 3 cases in the UK

Let’s hope not. It looks like events are mostly being deferred until October.

UK is expecting a peak soon, so Summer events may be good to go. Italy should be well over the worst of it by the time of IM Italy in September.

I hope not too, but it’s too early to know how long this will last. I have a feeling this will be several months of disruption…not just several weeks. And if they all get postponed until Sept/Oct/Nov, how will IM be able to support a year’s worth of races all crammed into 2.5 months?

We better not cancel this thread because I just finished Appalachian and you peeps are the only ones who will understand my suffering.

My gym closed as well. Not sure what I’m going to do for swimming but I’m sure as hell going to get a ton of biking and running in

I have some. I can send you a couple for cost of shipping. Your current valve extenders are fine.

Nice! You’re training is going much better than mine.

My 70.3 is cancelled but I am relieved as my training has been pure doodoo!
