The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

There’s a good thread here

I’ve done 3.15-4h rides indoors the last weeks. It’s not been pleasant but I got through it and had a nice fitness boost!

Finally figured out the saddle sore issue after messing around with the saddle position for a while and was able to do a couple 2+ hour indoor rides with no discomfort.

We’ve had a nice weather spell for the last week or so and I decided to go do one of my threshold workouts outside on Monday at my usual training area, a 3-mile mostly-flat residential loop that goes along the Chesapeake. Long story short, got hit by a car, taken to shock trauma in an ambulance, and am now recovering and doing the insurance bit. My road bike’s (Allez Spring Disc) completely trashed. Not sure how my upcoming races will be impacted. That’s all I’ll say about that for now (until insurance stuff is settled).

Needless to say I’ll be in the market for a new road bike soon and will probably upgrade (as one does when one gets a new bike). Definitely going for electronic shifting and carbon wheels from the start. I’ll probably make or post in a separate thread about this but I’m currently considering:

  • Trek Emonda SL7 Disc (comes with ultegra di2 and a decent wheelset) for $5.2k
  • Specialized Tarmac Disc Comp (comes with ultegra di2 but would need to upgrade the wheelset) for $4.4k
  • Cannondale SystemSix Evo Disc (comes with eTap AXS and decent wheelset) for $6.5k
  • Canyon Ultimate or Endurace (comes with di2 but would need a wheelset) for around $3.5k

My favorite LBS carries Trek/Cannondale so I’ll probably end up going with one of those.

Open to any opinions.

Gosh! Hope you are back to 100% soon. If you have insurance related issues, bikelaw.com could be a good resource for you.

Glad you’re ok.
Get the bike that you love and want to ride in the color you love.

You want to do it right. Tell the LBS to get you a bike fit and order the bike after the fit. So you have the exact size frame with the exact size stem.

For a road bike, I prefer the etap over di2.

The longest I’ve gone is this bad boy. Get a couple movies, and when it gets tough, go to music.

February update already!

Feeling strong and gaining momentum each week. All bike and run sessions hit as planned, but only the long swim session with a second swim cords session each week, local 50m pool reopening next week after 10 months so should be easier to get in. Also lifting 1-2 times a week and getting core/BW stuff in 1-2 times.

After the first few ~3 hour turbo rides in base the 4+ hours sessions are starting to feel comfortable around 195-200W. The shorter Brick day rides have made massive progress too, hit 238W for 1h45m aero during Polar Bear this week compared to this point last year during HIM base with 206W for 1h15m on Phoenix. With bike and aero upgrades too I’m excited to get outdoors and test things out.

Enjoying running the most right now but that’s probably because I haven’t ridden outdoors in an age. Fitness better than it ever has been with no aches or pains and paces at given RPE’s coming down each week.

Almost finished the summer TT/Tri build of ebay buys too:

I’ve never hit my weekend sessions for the last 3 weeks now.

Flu
At a Wedding
Now a bad back

That’s a run and a bike missed each week.

Luckily I do my biggest sessions mid week but still not happy.

Into a recovery week this week so hopefully my back will recover

Bloody cars! Glad you’re recovering well.

Dropped my first workout today .
An impromptu visit to the the pub to watch the rugby ended in a very late night and one (9) too many last night and Big Mountain ended up too big. The wife dragged me out for a 5k run and managed to lift but annoyed to drop a longer ride. Must resist the urge to squeeze it back in and just accept there will be dropped sessions but man it’s annoying.
A little daunted at the training load coming up now, a new job is also adding stress and need to get the balance right again. Not easy this is it?

Training derailed by Coronavirus?

Could have been a result of Corona(s)?

Maybe solved by Corona(s)?

Dude my whole summer before a big race is a giant sine wave of confidence. There’s days I’m pretty much Frodeno, and other days I feel like I can’t run a mile. It’s not fun.

Killin it! Once you get your swim going, you’ll be a force on the race course.

Does anyone have experience with one of the laminated aero suits? I’ve got a good deal on the endurance qdz and it fits very well. But with all the silicone applications on the surface I’m a bit worried how would ever get in or out of my wetsuit with it. Rolling it down seems like a bad option either as it is so tight and with the grippers in the sleeves I’m not confident I could get in on when wet.

It’s still horribly expensive, if it really is this unpractical I’d rather send it back.

I thought they changed the rule so you don’t need to roll down your suit anymore?

Yes I think so too. But I’m wondering whether that thing is so sticky that it could not be worn reasonably under a wetsuit.

First setback of 2020. Did a long ride and brick run on Saturday, which went well, then came down with a fever that evening (wife and I both caught a bug from our toddler— coronavirus hasn’t reached our region🤒). It’s now Tuesday and still not 100%, though getting there. Killing me to miss training, but I know it’s just a blip. So far I’ve missed a long run, quality swim, hard interval TR workout, strength session, and two easy runs. Hoping to ease back in tomorrow morning with a recovery ride.

Keep wondering whether any adaptation to the training leading up to getting sick can take place, or if my body is too busy fighting off the infection. Guessing somewhere in the middle. Either way, hope you all stay healthy and rest when you need to!

Give it a few days and ramp back in gently by turning down the intensity. :+1: You won’t lose anything but you top end sprint and that’ll come back by itself.

Pool goers!
Is Covid 19 Panic keeping you away, or is it bliss being able to get sets in without the etiquette-ignorant crowding the lanes? :grinning:

Well after some confusion, a package with a ton of free nutrition arriving at my house, spam email checks and frantic messaging, looks like I am going to my first training camp ever! Hahaha turns out I got onto one of those kick-ass triathlon teams and they are doing a training camp in the west coast. All I need to do is get there and get a place to stay. Its gonna be pretty exciting! I’ll also get to finally ride my bike early and do the maiden voyage a month early!

Anyone have any advice on what to expect on these things? Looks like its gonna be full of FOP guys and gals so no sandbagging will be required. I plan to just survive the camp and load as much fatigue as I can. TBH I am super pumped, only thing concerning is delays/problems with flying and Corona virus. Also I am stressed about the flight losing my beautiful bike; might get some bike insurance this year considering the thing is worth so much and I am worried about the plane losing my bike.

Gonna be super neat to go to this camp. As a self-coached athlete, it will be so awesome to talk to a bunch of really, really fast people and get coaching insight from them. I don’t see any downside from this other than getting my ass whooped continuously for 5 days.

Well, the usual medium lane swimmers weren’t there today so I had a lane to myself for a lot of the time, BUT, the fast lane was super busy (with people who really should have been with me in the medium lane).

My approach is to get as far into the ride with only music and reading as possible. I’ve made it about 2 hours. Then Netflix or whatever for the rest. Breaks it up nicely. If I start with video entertainment I get burned out faster.
