The Ironman Training 2020 Thread

I’m doing IMTX 2020! It will be my first full distance as well!

I’ve done a couple half IMs (5:05, and 5:49), and I’m really looking forward to seeing what I can do with a proper build and doing some real work on swimming and running. As an ex-pro cyclist (not a very good one), my strengths in steady high % FTP efforts line up really well with a full distance, so I’m really looking forward to it! Do you live in Texas? I started racing bikes in 2011, the first year of IMTX, and the old bike course went by my neighborhood!

I will be signing up for my first full at the IM Tulsa. Bummer that my hometown (Denver) lost this IM but still hoping for a great venue at the inaugural race! Just start the low volume full plan and loving structured training so far. Will be expecting my wife and I’s first child in Jan 2020 so this training season should be interesting!

No, I don’t live in Texas. I live in Chicago. I’m really hoping for cool weather on race day since my heaviest training will be in Jan, Feb, and March, months that are not known for their warmth here in Chicago. I’m actually on my second week of training. So far, so good! Good luck with your training!

Need a little help here, experimented with TrainerRoad before but need to get serious now as I have a big year in 2020
April Manchester marathon
July LC Wales
September Ironman Wales
Looking for a suitable winter program to get my bike in good shape for the spring, any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated

Since you still have quite a bit of time, you could just go through the full distance low volume base phase twice before moving on to the build phase. Doing the low volume version would let you get some extra running in in preparation for your first event of the year (marathon) and then once that’s done you could start putting more focus back on the bike.

I’m doing something similar – first big event of the year is IM Lanzarote in May, so I’m going the “base” portion of an 80/20 full distance plan twice before moving on to the second half of the plan. It will help me build a better base and allows me to slowly work running back in as I’m currently struggling with either plantar fasciitis, bruised heel, or stress fractures (can’t figure out which).

Still active whilst people are racing this year.

This thread is for people with an event targeted in 2020 - there’s going to be overlap, but I’ll close 2019 when the last race is run (we have at least one guy/gal racing in December I believe)

Welcome!

Low vol a wise move, and plenty of us have young kids and make it to the finish line…you’ll be fine!

I’d echo what @rjessop said. All the OSB events are well organised.

It’s not the quickest of HIM’s but it’s a good fair test and a race I’d happily do again if it fits timewise :+1:

Welcome to the Thread Robbo64!

Put IM Wales in your calendar and count back to the beginning of the Base/build/speciality. That will give you the start date for your IM training.

Then you’ve got a bunch of options. Structured training is hard mentally and physically, doing TR plans from now til IM Wales, wouldn’t be my first choice.

Look at your strengths and weaknesses across SBR. With your spring marathon I guess running is going to feature first through winter, you might want to dovetail that with bike to begin with (LV Sweet Spot Base), then swap out the bike for swim as the run volume ramps up.

Thanks that sounds like good advice👍

Count me in. IMLP 2020 and maybe Muskoka 70.3. Build Training starts Monday

Totally agree and since low volume isn’t that low at all (intensity and volume wise), you are very well prepared for an IM-Event.

With Championship week here I’m “forced” to start planning my 2020.

So far I’ve just got a bunch of ideas;

Feb Oman 70.3
April Marathon
Jun Staffs 70.3
Jul IM Vitoria Gascais
Sep/Oct IM Italy or Barcelona

Italy/Barca sell out quick so Ill need to decide that first.

After my fist IM this year in Frankfurt, I am totally confused what I should do in 2020.

My hip is still a bit injured, so I’ll try to get into running again with a very cautious approach and a lot of core-training (which I didn’t do at all till now  ).

Nevertheless I try to find a goal and a suitable training plan for 2020.
A full IM would be nice, but my wife is pregnant and the birth of our child could be in the next few days. My first priority should be a good father and being out for swimming, cycling and running all weekend isn’t helpful with that…
So maybe it will be Challenge Walchsee and or Ironman 70.3 Zell am See.

My main concern is the right plan for me. TR LV IM was fine for me, except the bad hip injury at the end. But 3x swimming per week didn’t work for me performancewise and will not work for me next year timewise.
So I’m wondering if the more 80/20 approach here would maybe suit me better than TR HIM LV. Swimming there is only 2x/week and core+stretching is already included…

They have Base, Build, Peak, 12 weeks each and I’d have to decide if I’d go 70.3 or full not until peak (since only Peak is special for Mid or Full distance)…

Well first off, Bon Chance! Let us know how it goes.

Secondly, hip injury…which sport can you train without any concern for your hip?:wink: Come on in, the waters fine!

I’d be thinking, forget structured training while my hip improves and the baby lands. You’re bound to have some free time, so just slot in swims and runs when you can.

Then reassess in a couple of months.

That is a wise recommendation.
I am just too impatient and in love with triathlon to wait several months.
And if I‘d choose one of the trainingpeaks plans I‘d have to decide soon, which direction I‘d like to choose…

Did @chad make an advise someday, how he‘d reduce the swimming workouts to 2, without loosing too much of the training effect?

@JoeX let me know if you are going to Italy or Barcelona. I‘d love to race at your side someday!

Personally I’d do Italy over Barcelona I think. Aside from Barcelona’s reputation for being a draftfest on the bike the Italian race looks like it has a far more interesting parcours overall.

Cyclist here talked into triathlon by buddy. IM70.3 traverse city on 2020 race schedule. Only have done 2 sprints in past on no training (other than cycling)

Goal is sub 5 hour, we will see.

Currently I could do Bike in 2:35 without much trouble I think, on a flat course with a tt bike

No idea about run but I can do 20 min 5k on no training so thinking a 1:35 for run pretty reasonable on not too much training.

For swim then would have to do 50 minutes. In sprint tri I Did 1200m in 26 minutes so 2000m in 50 seems doable

So don’t need to get faster just string them back to back.

Oof. Started SSB this morning, Mount Field, can’t remember the last TR session I did and boy it felt tough!. Followed up with 3hrs digging up turf, so I should sleep well tonight. :slightly_smiling_face:
