random question for all. I have just finished SSB2. `I am looking to move into a build not a specific try plan yet will wait till later on in the season. I have made some great gains already on my sustained power. However, i feel that my punch in my ride is not there but not sure if i need at. This is my first time going through a trainer road year cycle. Would you do a general build for a slight benefit in sustained power and short power. Or as i know my weakness is short power. Do a block of that via the short power build for the VO2 benefit before the new season training really kicks off ? What are your thoughts. MY FTP has gone from 2.2w/kg to now 3.6w/kg since December 2019. started trainer road in July 2020.
Short power comes and goes pretty quickly. Inserting a punch block now is unlikely to benefit your racing in who knows how many months to come. It can however be fun and bring some diversity to your training. If that’s what you’re looking for, then go for it. If you’re racing draft legal and need a punch for your races, then tailor your speciality plan accordingly. If you’re racing non-draft and have no other practical use for punchiness I’d say don’t bother and stick with whatever plan builder has in store for you.
was just wondering as they say a higher VO2 can correlate to better performance for endurance athletes. But i would not have a use really for the punch as you say. Would just be for all round strength on the bike
Hi all. Just finished reading through this super long thread! I just signed up for my first 70.3 in June, the Des Moines HIM. I’m in the middle of my first build block of the LVHIM plan and struggling with staying on top of running fatigue (running is a weak point of mine). Cross my fingers it all works out.
Welcome @jeesh , reading the whole thread is an endurance event itself, Ironman will hold no fears for you!
We all need a bit of luck for the races to go ahead next year - but leave those worries behind for now and focus on getting those sessions and fuel in
I think for overall progress the TR plans should have you covered. The tri plans do touch on all energy systems after all.
But I get your point, breaking the monotony can be helpful for mind and body! I’ve also experimented with a more polarized approach and found that it worked better than just cycling though the tri plans for the third or fourth time. Might be genetics or just the variation after doing the same training for a while. You have the time, so why not give it a shot? As long as consistency remains high it won’t hurt.
I remember you talking about a high intensity run programme you were going to do, how did it go and what was it called?
Run Less, Run Faster. I did the Marathon programme, not the Novice Marathon. I think it went well, but it was tough. Especially the long runs. But I would do it again
It’s 3 runs per week, 2 cross training and 2 strength.
I tried LV olympic base which was fine, but stronglifts sessions I had to move about - no lifting the day before long run day. And I struggled to make the pace target on the long runs.
The book is fairly cheap on Kindle when I got it.
I have always done the Run Less, Run Faster approach.
However, this year due to the impact of C-19 on my chest I have to stay away from my normal approach - Instead I have switched to MAF - and am following the Run More, Run Slower Approach -
I am currently averaging 6 runs per week - I will see how it goes this season
I did that during lockdown, ran at least 5k every single day from april 1st to Sept 1st always keeping heart rate in a max of zone 2 but now looking to try something different.
When I started TR running was my strength and cycling my weakness, 2 years later I am pushing up on 4 w/kg but my running has barely changed.
I still have a low FTP for a big guy
And considering I do hilly races … that’s not good
Should be on the running thread but Im umming and arring about starting structured run training. I set a 5k target for Jan 1st but Ive barely run since my event. The early cancellation of Brighton marathon played an big part in that plus some family issues are taking my attention. Gained 3kg too.
If I did run regularly I need to decided between volume aerobic training or the intensity RLRF protocol. Running six days a week doesnt really appeal to me but if I dont try it Ill never know.
You planning to attend the rescheduled September edition?
Vaccine announcement gives me hope that next year should see us getting back to some racing in the summer
My name’s down, but its basically a backup if IM Barcelona looks to be cancelled
I’ve been very happy in my Dave Scott HUUB trisuit. Very very comfortable and looks the part. No major complaints over a full IM.
Over the shoulder - I also use Huub Dave Scott Long Course, or do you meandown to the wrist?
Elbow length
@jameswestgate @JoeX I really like that suit, and wiggle is having a 50% sale on it. I think I’m going to order one.
What about a entry level wetsuit? I’m thinking of buying a Blueseventy Sprint. Any feedback or other suggestions?
I think its very individual, we all SBR slightly differently and a good fit is more important than brand/model.
I even have a pair of tri shorts that are great one week and uncomfortable the next(!)
Ive used 2XU, Sugoi, Zone2 entry models. All fit well, zips went eventually on the 2XU before the suit itself wore out.
