Hope you have a decent fan in there!
yes they have a pretty good fan which i was even thinking about buying for myself once i’m back to land. At the gym there’s no internet and only two channels on the TV so i’ll probably have to deal with boredom but if i keep my focus i think i can do it. Also, the 4h long ride my be a challenge to fit within my daily activities, will probably have to cut off a bit of sleep but let’s see how this goes.
6 weeks out for my first Ironman. Feel that all that fatigue just started to accumulate.
Follow the High Volume Ironman Plan and did the Stromlo +4 yesterday, but totally failed.
I can go through the Budawang + 3 prescribed the week before but cannot just go through one rep for this week. Tried to lower the intensity, increase the rest, but just feel legs do not have any force and sore.
Anyone has been struggled with this? Thanks!
@Tony_Kung, Those workouts are the worst. They are long vo2 sessions in disguise. However, if i can’t even do the first interval, I have learned to stop instead of stubbornly fight. It just means that I need rest or I am getting sick which means I need rest.
@mountainrunner, sorry for the anticlimactic A race. You did great considering. I think I would be deflated too on the run in your situation. You should think about an aero helmet. You’re a speedy guy and prob would benefit you.
@Michael_Tate, congrats on the win! I can never do a C/B race. Just can’t hold myself. If I’m racing, it’s balls to the walls.
Do you all take a day off during the week or just use that one day for a short recovery style workout or a swim? I am shooting for one full day off but looking at scheduling.
Those workouts definitely happen every now and then! For me it usually has something to do with not eating enough or not sleeping well. If your workouts are successful for the majority of the time chalk this up as an off day and make sure to recover well!
It’s preferable, but oftentimes I don’t and instead squeeze a swim into my reco days. I keep it easy and focus on form.
I know that many, @chad included say you should take a full day off, but that gives me just a double-day later that week. And with a kid and full time job double days are so much more stressful that I feel quite happy dropping the rest day.
The high volume plans are for people who basically can dedicate 24 hours a day to training, rest and recovery. You’re going to be accumulating some serious fatigue. The last thing you want to do is go into your first Ironman struggling with too much fatigue and blow up half-way through. For even a dedicated front of pack age-grouper (that has a job and other life responsibilities) the mid or low volume plans may get you even better results and not put you into a state of over-training.
Obviously one failed workout doesn’t mean you have to change anything, but if it becomes a constant struggle you should try dialing back the stress and focus on better recovery, which the lower volume plans will allow. While 6 weeks sounds like a long time, you don’t want to be killing yourself so close to your race.
Thanks for your reply.
Now my commitments other than training are minimal so I can dedicate a lot of time to train.
One caveat is that I only follow the bike workouts in the plan, and insert my own run and swim workouts, which pack more volume and intensity than those in the TR plan.
I believe I accumulate even higher fatigue than it should be.
I follow an 8 day plan. 3 days working out, 1 day rest, 3 days workout, 1 day rest. The 3 days are hard, moderate, hard if I can manage on schedule. I don’t do recovery weeks. If I feel very tired, I take another day of rest.
So sometimes I have one day off a week and sometimes 2.
Oof sounds tough! I tried HV when I took time off work, but my body couldn’t handle it.
I’d agree with @mattstewartonline, don’t change anything dramatically with only six weeks out but I’d dial down the intensity.
You’ve done all the major work and performance benefits, this phase is about fine tuning and making sure you’re ready for race day.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!
I always have at least one day per week with no SBR.
End of August and our list of Finishers expands dramatically! ![]()
