The Ironman in 2019 thread

It’s the drugs. They’re all on something. They try to cover it up by the excessive use of perfume, or in a few cases Old Spice, but you can still tell.

My club sea swim was cancelled this morning because of the high winds so I went to the pool instead and it coincided with an aqua class.

The tension in the air from all the noodle waving was palpable.

I’m having a shit time trying to book an airbnb for copenhagen next year, you find one you want, contact them and they are full

Moment of surprise today when I saw that they had a new bike onboard that just happens to be a WattBike! :zap::+1:

IMCZ build up may not be completely lost because of this offshore trip. Any tips for training on a wattbike? I saw it works with TR but does not have ERG mode which will require some getting used to but shouldn’t be an issue.

I found that I tested a very similar FTP on that model as my P1S pedals, so I would happily use one.

However the lack of a fan makes completing a session other than a RAMP quite hard for me. See how you go, but don’t beat yourself up if the lack of cooling defeats you.

Trying to achieve a similar aero position was an exercise in futility. Just getting a solid session in upright is good enough.

VCheck booking.com as it includes apartments and not just hotels. Also, HomeAway.com is big here in Europe. There are other options to AirBNB here (though I’d have to search for them).

I normally use a Stages spin bike for TR workouts. No erg mode, but very easy to settle into a power level and hold it fairly steady. When I was in Zurich a few weeks ago for IM, I used a day pass to do a final workout on a Wattbike. Although I liked the saddle and bars a bit more than stages, I found it next to impossible to hold a steady power level. maybe I didn’t set it right or pick the right program. So don’t get too frustrated if you have the same experience. still got a good sweaty workout

Given your forum name you might like Lake Como. My “easy run/walk” was a 5k with 150m climbing in the last 800m or so!

Thanks. There are some good hills around there. I was in the area - Lake Maggiore - two years ago and found a nice hill to run. Wasn’t a fast run but it was all running. Wife and daughter took the lift up and the daughter and I enjoyed the rollercoaster at the top. (Took the :mountain_cableway: down )

Wow, now that is some elevation gain. :+1:

I did a two hour ride on it yesterday and the power felt to be true to RPE/HR in comparison to my V1. I thought about re-doing a ramp test but i’ll try to keep my current FTP and see how it goes. They have a nice fan at the ship’s gym but my main issue will be to train with flat shoes since i didn’t bring my cycling shoes(would never imagine to have a wattbike onboard…lol). Need to double check if it is possible to adjust the length of the clip so my foot doesn’t go all the way trough, if not i think the only option left is to remove the clip altogether.
I already do my indoor training on a road bike(only ride the TT outdoor) so, no problem there. Fit-wise i actually felt pretty good on it. It is still miles away from my roadbike+kickr but the wattbike is definitely not an average spin bike.

I don’t know how the stages bike is set up but i thought hard to reach the lever and knob to change the resistance on the wattbike. For short intervals i think it would be an issue. On my two hour ride yesterday it was ok to keep the power steady, just need to wrap my head around not having ERG mode, keep a good eye on the cadence and sweat it out!

Cheers

Just want to say that I did a 10 day trip to Iceland where I did no biking whatsoever. When I returned, I didn’t feel that I had lost anything on the bike. Just want to make sure people don’t get to anxious if they don’t workout for a week or so. It’s great if there is time for it and the equipment but no harm in recovering either.

Checking in with a training update. Less than wo weeks out from Traverse City, MI 70.3. Anybody else going? It’s my first, and the only other race I’ve done so far is a sprint last month. Feeling good though! I had a big workout yesterday with gibralter + 75min run @ race pace. I definitely had some left in the tank so i’m not as nervous for the run as I was when training started. I’m ready to race.

Did my first real workout on it today. I’m really happy that i get to train with power again. Now i can say that i’m officially training for IMCZ. No window though, just a wall filled up with motivational memes, which can also help…

Usually i wouldn’t but this is a six week trip right when i should start my build phase. I was trying to keep up training on a spin bike and HR but it wasn’t really motivating, guess that training with power got me spoiled but this wattbike couldn’t have come on better time!

My A-race for the season was yesterday (Calgary 70.3) and I met my goal of coming in sub 6:30 with a 17 minute or so PB. It was a challenging race; it was raining in transition, through the swim and the early portion of the bike. I had seeded myself at the 45 minute sign for the swim and came in bang on target, which I was really pleased about. The bike was okay and I was on track to come in around 3 hours. With about 20k left to go on the bike I got a flat. Not a “maybe I can ride this back” flat, but a suddenly rim scraping along the tarmac flat. I had to execute my first on the road flat change and I was terrified that my inexperience would lead to a pinch flat and I would be hooped since I only had one spare tube with me. Luckily I made it back to transition and by the time I got there I had managed to banish all the negative thoughts that had popped up while I was on the side of the road. The run was possibly the biggest surprise of the day; I kept waiting to implode but it never happened and I ran it about 45s/mile faster than I had budgeted for.

Now to go clean 90k of riding grit and 400k of driving grit off the bike…

Just wondering does anyone upload the courses for the race on their bike computers

And in the same vein what do you have shown in terms of data fields

Thanks

Never put the course in my bike computer, don’t really see the point, you know how long it is, and should have reviewed where the large hills are, etc.

For my data fields, what I’ve found to work best on the bike is to auto lap every 15km, so I can break the race down into 6 chuncks (70.3). On my main screen I show 10 sec Lap NP, Lap HR, and speed. Lap NP is the most important for me as that’s how I’m pacing it. And since I have it auto lap every 15km it’s a little more responsive to changes in the course. I have other screens with cadence and overall time and such, but I rarely look at them.
