I see. My considerations are different, but similar thought process. I think it would help if you can do some quick spins. The more race oriented bikes will handle differently, like going from a sports car to an SUV. They can both be fun, both take you down the road, but it won’t take long at all to notice that it’s a different experience. Regardless of what you pick, you can likely do a lot about comfort w/ fit, kit, touch points, and, perhaps easiest, tires.
I don’t think I was able to treat myself to anything when I finished my PhD, so you’re already off to a great start!
