It’s only £4/month if you pay for 12 months at a time.
Same here lol.
I’ve tried to use Strava to plan routes but have found it much worse than Ridewithgps.com.
I’m sending a cookie your way. Please pm me your address
I agree, found it doesn’t even take me the right way round roundabouts sometimes!
Intervals.icu for sure. You still have to upload your rides to Strava for it to pull them down from. you don’t need the premium version though.
It will also give you TSS from HR for activities without power. And you can choose how much that TSS contributes to either fitness or fatigue. (e.g. you can have strength training contribute to fatigue but not fitness)
That’s not too bad, still think packages is a better idea!
Huh, I don’t think I’ve ever had an issue like that. Do you live in a country that drives on the right side of the road?
Yep, Intervals. Wonder how long that lasts, though… … …
Your points are well taken. RWGPS definitely has some good features. I had several in-depth discussions with them as I was considering getting a team account for our club. However, the 2 aspects I mention I still believe Strava has the edge. Another point you make is also well taken - “Beta”. I have been surprised that Strava has not made Strava routing even more feature rich and robust.
Yeah I found it useless in editing a route if I didn’t get it 100% correct on the first pass or to edit an old route.
that would be the worst. there was talk of this before and tons of pushback. personally, i’d look for another platform if it came to that.
Intervals.icu
Free, continually expanding and the person that made this site often posts on this forum.
I just hope they don’t cut out the “sync everything to everything” feature… That’s probably what I use strava for the most… collecting outdoor rides, TR workouts, the odd indoor ride on other platforms. Best thing is all of it automatically ends up on the TR calender, which I generally stare at most of the time.
But just in case: what alternatives do you guys use for that purpose?
Strava seems to have a very tenuous relationship with their third parties. In the past, it seems like they’re fine with them right up until they get properly popular, then pull the plug.
@WattageBazooka
+1 from me on intervals.icu
I think Veloviewer might have problems going forward.
They rely on analysing your segments and I suspect they will not be able to keep on doing that
I love when people make this dramatic exit like “well looks like I’ll be deleting this too”. No need to announce your departure. I for one love strava segments and the fun and competition they bring and I’ve met so many local riders from leaderboards. I don’t know why there seems to be this anti-Strava sentiment here, not from everyone, but feels like a majority
This is some funny stuff. Strava brings back features in the past year that they cut and now deletes things. I am not a big user but will miss the matched rides feature.
I just posted this elsewhere, but there’s a part of me that’s almost frustrated by how they’re trying to monetize. They have such a unique opportunity to make money:
- Advertise a race to all runners in a 30 minute drive
- Last minute: advertise a marathon in 4 weeks to runners who are averaging more than 35mpw and don’t have a race on their calendar
- Wait, Strava doesn’t have a race cal you say? Fix that, then add in suggested ‘opening races’ that sponsors could pay to be considered for.
- Strava already tracks shoe data… Work with advertisers to create sponsored posts congratulating you on your 500mi, then offering 10% off a pair of shoes which is the updated version of the ones you’ve been using
- Content marketing. They have what, 50m users, a huge number of which can’t all be experts? Create fantastic free knowledge resources with affiliate links. Or, alternatively, send out free training plans at the appropriate times automatically (“Congrats on your first 5k! Here’s how to get to 10k!”) and include access to paid content (higher level training plans, group coaching sessions, etc) at the same time.
- Really properly build out scheduling, planning, and analysis tools, and then leverage their community for accountability and social aspects. You just nailed ten planned workouts in a row? Congrats, Strava understood that and made a post about it; your friends can click on the post, see your progress over the last 8 weeks, and Kudos you for the 10 workouts.
Those are just some ideas I thought of in as much time as it took to type them. I’m not a sports marketer. And heck, maybe they wouldn’t even make that much money. But it seems like they’re just straight up not doing a lot of things that seems RIGHT up their wheelhouse, while trying to paywall and cordon off basic features in a desperate attempt to get people to begrudgingly cough up a few dollars. It really doesn’t seem sustainable. Other players in the market have proven people will pay for features like great analysis, planning, historical data, and more, and yet Strava just hasn’t even tried integrating them. Apple is a great example here: you don’t even really need to be first; if you have an existing userbase, just implement the idea well and let your users use it and enjoy it.
