Like I said it doesn’t bother me too much, kind of comical in a pathetic way. There was one day with a wind from the north where he drove to 3 separate places about 10 miles apart, did repeats of each segments until he got it, then went to the second place, then the third. If I was after them I’d at least ride from one to the other: imagine if the sprinters for each respective pro team got dropped off 1km before the finish line by the team car
Kinda surprised he’s even getting out of the car if he’s that desperate…
@AJS914 @cujo I misread the post. I thought he was saying he “drove” the segment with the TT bike in the back, so not riding. My bad.
I need more coffee I guess and agree there’s really nothing wrong with what he was doing. That’s strava…
I thought the same!
That’s how I read it first too. It was only when I saw subsequent replies that it twigged
Maybe he has someone driving him to the spots and motor pacing him! that would be so so sad
I’ve lost KOMs in the last week to motorpacing and 2 people working together on a short 1:30 hill.
Honestly almost stopped caring about KOMs - they usually have to be unsustainably hard efforts, and they’re generally not compatible with good training. There is a Tory kid who has a very high self-worth, and I’d enjoy taking one of his KOMs - that’s about the height of motivation I can muster nowadays!
I’m just jealous you guys can get anywhere near the KOM times . All the ones I like the look of around here are so freaking fast
.
Yea sorry if I didn’t make that clear, he is driving BETWEEN segments instead of riding TO them. That’s why I was kinda meh about it, technically not breaking any rules but just seems kind of cheap. But the differences in times are small enough that I know if I had nothing better to do I could smash all of them.
I just want to go ride my bike and have fun, whatever happens happens
I dunno, got faster when chasing targeted KOMs. Guess it depends on your definition of good training.
Despite being an old geezer (55) with a low FTP, I’ve got good sprint power and 3-4 minute power. I’ve got 3 pages of KOMs on Strava - the majority are under 3-4 minutes and the rest under 10 minutes.
The other day, I got within 2 seconds of the top 10 and 4 seconds from the KOM on a sprint segment the other day.
Winning KOMs from youngsters motivates me to try over and over until I get into the top 10 or get the KOM outright.
Going and taking 10 of the guys KOMs in a day would be funny!
You guys atleast can get KOM’s - most decent competitive segments in London involves either proper Peletons or sally’s dodgy commute data taking her 60kmh to work…
I’d literally sprinted up my local steep alleyway doing about 700W for 45sec (i’m 64kg) - and i got 3rd… top 2 was just dodgy commuter data. But its fine tbh…
I was in the back of an Ambulance in Barnet and I got 4th before I cropped the ride
Imagine being a MTBer and crying cause you lost an off-road Strava segment to a guy on a road bike.
I guess I used to be at the other end of the scale - became an anaerobic monster and would regularly go and get 3-10 KOMs on a ride, but not do much else, so it was at the expense of deeper fitness.
I would probably drop my old self quite easily now, so I guess for me, good training is anything to become a better all-round cyclist, and it could include a well placed hill in a ride occasionally. Top drawer 1 minute power would be nice to have if races were happening for sure.
Tbh that’s valid in my book! I hope you kept that KOM!
Errr yeah - If you take your road bike to an off-road segment and KOM it - all the power to you! Just means you brought the right bike on the day. If you drove to the segment and put the bike away at the top of the climb I’d probably not agree so much.
Also - as primarily an MTB rider these days every MTB segment is a case of having the right equipment for the segment. If that happened to be a road bike I don’t think anyone would care. People ride CX bikes around my local MTB trails all the time there’s no issue as far as I see it.
Except mostly its Roadies on the adjacent road taking the offroad KOMs because GPS isn’t accurate enough
I have the KOM up the dead end street my brother lives on. I did it solely to annoy him so he always had to see my name at the top of the last segment on his ride, but it turns out he couldn’t care less so basically I’ve just played myself.
