Stair Climb Event workout

I would appreciate any suggestions on particular TR workouts to utilize, leading up to a stair climb event.
Also, should I spend more time training anaerobic, VO2, threshold, etc?
I’m hoping to finish in approximately 6 minutes.
Thanks for the help.

On your Stairmaster? I have an FTP around 300 at 3.8 w/kg and when I had to take the stairs the other day at work I thought I was going to die. Idk if cycling is the best cross training for this event. Saying all that, I would do hard low cadence work (simulating climbing steps as close as possible) but be careful to not hurt yourself.

I used to run a lot of stairs at a local stadium.

My advice is go run stairs. While there will be some fitness carryover, there are different leg muscles involved than biking.

You will have to work your fast-twitch muscles. Like said above “stairs”. Local sports bleachers are a good place for that.

Stair climbing at the gym was easily one of my favorite off-season workout way back in the day. @Kurt_Pershing Are you talking about an event on gym equipment or on actual stairs?

So true, when I go up stairs at my house, I’m always thinking why am I so tired when I train on the bike so much?

Thanks for responses! The event is in a 37 story office building.

The closest you’ll get is low cadence, while in an aero position / in the drops.

There’s definitely a bit of carry-over from 2 at a time stair climbing to seated power imho, though I only do 6 floors a couple of times a day when I’m in my office (by choice, there is a lift).

I think that the time for the event will dictate any comparable workouts.

I will say that you can expect your heart rate to be a fair amount higher before your settle into your stair climbing threshold. If at all possible, I’d say practice on an actual set of stairs, next best thing being a stair stepper at a gym.
