Hey yall!
So, today I did a 70 mile gravel ride in the rain. The mud was not cyclocross level. Mostly just wet spray that had dirt, grit and sand in it. After a while my Sram Axs XPLR Rival 12 speed stopped shifting passed 6th gear smoothly. I would shift to 1st and the mech would move to 6th gear. After around 30 seconds it would slowly skip gears and climb up the cassette. I figured it was just the mud messing things up. I got home and cleaned everything up. Full clean and re-wax the chain. Cassette is sparkling. The works. I go to shift it and it still will not move passed the 6th speed. (assuming 10t is 1st speed)
So I pulled up the AXS app and tried that. No updates. The apps shows me in 12st gear (easyest) but the mech refuse to move past 6th. I have tired checking everything. Even different Sram Battery’s. I know it is not the hoods. When I take the Deraliure off the cassette, it will shift through the gears. I could just warty it but I have a race in less than 1 week’s time so that would be a bit of a time pinch. If anyone has any tips or just ways to get it to work for 1 race before being warrantied, that would be much appreciated.
I don’t get this. What do you mean? Are you pulling the wheel out and the RD then moves all the way to the left (through all 12 gears)?
I wouldn’t expect it to act any different when a cassette is there or not, but maybe something is screwed up with a motor that it can’t push hard enough to get the chain to the next cog. The one thing I’d at least try is repairing everything with the AXS button on the RD. Maybe that would trigger some kind of reset of the RD, but it sounds like a mechanical problem if it’s working without load and then not working when having to push the chain up the cassette.
One other thing I’d check - make sure your jockey wheel cage is moving through the full motion smoothly.
As in something with the pressure of being on the cassette wont let it shift. I took the mech off and it went through all 12 gears. Put it back on and it will only go through 6.
The Jockey wheel is moving as free as it ever did. It has a built in clutch that gives resistance. But it moves relatively smooth like it did when I first got it. I will try unpairing and repairing everything just to see if it dose anything.
The motor is cooked. Hopefully it is still under warranty. This can be an issue if your chain is too short. The motor is working overtime and eventually it will burn out. There is no fix for this, it must be replaced.
Just for reference… and so you and the app are taking the same language, “1st gear” is the largest cog on the rear cassette. So if I understand correctly you are referencing the 10t cog or 12th gear on the XPLR cassette.
So it sounds like you can only ride in the 6 largest cogs? Have you checked to see if you have a bent hanger? Have you gone through the set-up to check the limit screws? Have you tried a new fully charged battery?
If nothing else it might be worth reaching out to SRAM warranty department directly or through your LBS. Let us know what comes of it… hope you get it figured out.
Yes. 1st gear is in reference to the big cog. 10t refers to the 12th gear that is a 10 tooth sprocket.
Correct. I am stuck in only 6 gears. It will not move up. It has 0 problem moving down.
I have tried update’s, new battery’s, checked all my limit screws. The chain length is correct. Derailleur hanger is fine.
One person said the motor is burned through. I pray its not that.
The only things I could think of from a setup standpoint is the B gap adjustment and the hanger. The RD will not shift up the cassette (to bigger cogs) if it senses too much resistance (like when you shift when not pedaling). Either of those 2 setup things could cause it. Have you checked hanger alignment with proper tool (park DAG)? It shouldn’t need to be perfect, but it doesn’t take much of a bend to cause binding. And for B gap, I’d try adjusting it way out as a test to see if it might be too tight and causing the interference.
Update
It seems this is a problem with Sram Rival XPLR rear derailleurs. As the guy I was riding with has the same problem. After taking my bike to the LBS, they contacted Sram. Sram said that it will be warrantied. So looks like I will get a new working rear derailleur out of my troubles. Good to know that Sram did not fight it I think. Maybe it means that this is common for them. But I am out one race and a bike for at least a week. So that sucks. Thank you yall for your advice and help!
Does SRAM know you have a race this weekend? If you are working through an LBS, that message doesn’t always make it across. I’ve had stuff like this happen in the past and SRAM (in particular) has bent over backwards to get parts in my hand to get me on the starting line. No reason they can’t have a RD in your hands in a day or 2. And worst case, an LBS that has stock should be able to hand you one on the spot and then SRAM can send them the warranty unit. If you are near central TX, I’ve got a basically unused AXS XPLR RD sitting in my parts bin you are welcome to borrow for the race.
I believe so. At least the LBS dose. They said that Sram was gonna send a new rear derailleur because they are not allowed to just slap one on. According to the LBS.
Thanks for the offer but in in North West Arkansas, so a fair bit away.
I don’t know your LBS, but many of them aren’t willing to go too far out of their way to get someone back up an running for a race. My experience working with SRAM direct is the opposite with many of the tech support and warranty people being racers themselves. They will still send the part to an LBS, but they will basically push the LBS to get you going again. Personally, I’d push on the LBS (in a nice but firm way) and/or contact SRAM direct, but I guess it depends on how much you want to race and what your relationship is with the LBS. Just seems silly not to race when it’s just a RD that can be swapped in under 5 minutes and you’ve got a couple days before the race (assuming it’s this weekend).
