I sent shimano a little fb message saying I thought it was a dick move. Their response was pretty much saying it’s because it’s a competitors product and nothing to do with the “data transfer issue” some articles have been mentioning so I don’t see them “fixing” this issue any time soon or ever meaning Hammerhead will probably never have this feature going forward. Yes it’s cheaper to replace head unit but I’m thinking my next bike will be SRAM just for shimano acting like a holes
See my post above….that is almost the entire reason SRAM still exists today. I don’t think this raises to an antitrust issue, nor do I think Shimano is gonna make that same mistake against SRAM again.
IANAL, but talking with company lawyers around partnership programs, the antitrust law can become interesting. As I said, I think if a DOJ lawyer cared about the bike space, this could be enough for a request for info. Which could be enough for Shimano to back down.
What I’d really like is for Garmin and Wahoo to pull support for Shimano’s proprietary implementation, and tell Shimano to adopt the standard. But that isn’t going to happen. But one can dream ![]()
So 4 weeks ago I bought and had installed the Shimano di2 wireless unit specifically so I could cycle through the pages on my Karoo 2.
I find this super useful as Im specific about what I have on the screens and I like to flick easily between them in group rides without having to take my hands off the bars.
This news has really made me angry with Shimano. So much so that my next bike would almost certainly be SRAM equipped.
Entering without having any partiality to anyone’s dilemmas, can I ask what it is about the HHK2 over the other head units that you wouldn’t change your head unit with this now current Shimano/HH debacle?
Basically, do the other headunits lack the functionality of the HHK2, and for your purpose?
I am a SRAM rider but trying to see a less drastic stance if I was posed with this scenario. Seems easier to change the head unit. I use Wahoo Roam.
Hasn’t that all been covered else where ? And a little whataboutism ?
After years of using Garmin and being frustrated by the navigation and re-routing, I wanted something with a large screen (failing short vision, 20/20 long vision) and my HH2 has been awesome, I don’t want to downgrade screen or processing speed to a Wahoo or Garmin
OK now you have to sell it and buy a Sigma Rox 4.0 … how does it feel ?
Why do I have to sell it? What is the hurdle preventing me from using it?
Your words are truly first world problems @WombleHunter
Can’t you ride your bike without it? Is this the biggest thing in your life that makes you come to an end? I wish I had your life problems.
I’m a new K2 user and having come from both of the previous Elemnt bolt models (which I liked) I was often frustrated with their routing and little niggles (eg can only cycle through the screens forward) I also used Garmin for many years and was constantly frustrated by the way the treat customers as beta users.
The Hammerhead has quite simply been amazing and gets better everytime I use it. The mapping and routing is superior to anything else and that coupled with the excellent climber feature (I love hilly gran Fondos and mountains when I get the chance!) So these things are top of the tree for me.
It also doesn’t give the consumer any confidence in Shimano going forward…where else might they pull their usage from. You might change to a other unit at your expense and then they do that too…wahoo are a competitor. They could be next…
Well if anybody is mad enough at Shimano and wants to offload some gear, I have an almost new Karoo 2 I’ll trade for some 12-sp shifters.
I was just trying to put you in the position of the HH2 owners in this forum you have told “to buy a different head unit” (a very first world attitude by the way)
Type 1 diabetic, with asthma with a heart condition and mother and sister with systs on the brain … you can have um
I don’t have DI2 so is unaffected by this issue, just don’t like being told that I should told to buy a different head unit, as for me the HH2 address my eyesight issues and the notifications from my CGM come up on it without issue (unlike the Garmin and Wahoo)
Hi, which CGM do you use and how do you get the notifications?
Something I’m interested in
I just use a Freestyle libre, I’m in the uk so have to pay for it myself, I just have the alarns set for low and high set fairly aggressive, and then the notification comes up on the HH2 from my phone, this has been working well for me, but I don’t get the “you are currently 5.6” from a Dexcom (thinking about trying) I also carry the libre scanner, as it’s small and easy to use on the fly … not truly a cgm I know,
When I started on this parth, the Dexcom was truly expensive, but the Libre was affordable, Dexcom prices have come down a lot, so I might try that, in which case a Garmin head unit might make sense, in which case it have to be 1030+ e.t.c becuase, well I can’t see anything smaller
I have never touched a Karoo, but here is what I know from the reviews: one commonly quoted strength of the HHKs is mapping, another is the setup via a computer. It also seems to be more powerful and flexible than, e. g. Wahoo’s head units.
Yes, sure, but this is still a completely petty, unnecessary and punishes customers — high-end customers, to be precise. There is no technical reasons. Ideally, Shimano should have just switched to the open Ant+ standard for electronic gearing.
But I’d say the problem is not this particular issue, it is Shimano’s mistaken belief it is better off with closed, proprietary protocols rather than open standards will lead to worse products. You can see this with their pedaling dynamics functionality for their power meters. @dcrainmaker’s post on this is hilarious — and sad if you like Shimano.* (And he can’t even test it, because Shimano’s power meters still aren’t available in volume.) Also here, Shimano relies on proprietary protocols with weird restrictions (e. g. you cannot simultaneously transmit power data over regular Ant+) that makes for a worse product, and that features aren’t used.
(*) I have Shimano XTR on my mountain bike and SRAM Force eTap AXS on my road bike. I don’t hate Shimano products, quite the contrary, I am very happy with both. But let’s say I am glad my XTR groupset is mechanical ![]()
Thanks this is good to know, I’m also in the UK.
I’m not diabetic but I’ve used the freestyle libre a couple of times for general health reasons and to understand my blood sugar responses and just because I’m really interested in all that kind of stuff!
I recently bought some through supersapiens as I think their app looks a bit more useable especially when combined with the sports specific data.
I’d never thought about the notifications through the phone to Karoo for this so glad it can be used.
The Supersapiens is a lot more like a CGM than the Freestyle, and I think they have a IQ app which puts them firmly in the Garmin camp (like dexcom), I also like that they do there own watch
I’m pretty sure it’s the exact same sensor…basically the freestyle libre 2.
As a Karoo user the IQ app doesn’t matter but the fact that the phone notifications is all I’ll need is great.
It doesn’t work out anymore from supersapiens than buying from abbots and with supersapiens you get a few sports performance patches to cover the sensor if you swim or if it coming off is an issue as well as use of their app/dashboard ( I’ve not idea if a sensor bought from abbot would work with supersapiens app but I can’t see why it wouldn’t!?)
Well get kicked out of here in a minute ![]()
They are basically the same sensor, but the supersapiens doesn’t have to medially approved (so could be the failed ones), and the Libre app doesn’t work with the supersapiens sensor, the benefit for me is that readings go to my consultant from the libre app without intervention … and I don’t pay Tax on medical devices ![]()
This statement does not line up with these….
Any issue that we discuss in this board is the very definition of a 1st World problem….so your dismissive argument belies your supposed neutrality / indifference.
Leaving aside the issues re: being able to control your screen via the top shift buttons, this also forces the user to rely on the Shimano app and their phone for any Di2 related info / data when it could have been easily accessible via the HH screen.
Sure, it isn’t a life crisis to have to reach into your pocket and pull out your phone, but as I noted earlier in the thread, it is just a bad PR / marketing move by Shimano. They have gained very little and garnered a LOT of criticism and ill will as a result.
I never told any forum user they have to buy a new head unit. I raised the scenario about why not buying another head unit versus buying non-Shimano for next bike as the pnly option being visited. Suttle distinction.
You told me
without any reason. Not having the luxury of seeing what gear I am in and flipping pages etc, the HHK2 still records as a fully functional head unit and is not dysfunctional for its main purpose. YEs, I agree, the additional benefits have been removed and may be the sole reason why I would have bought it. But there is no reason to have to sell it.
Guess where to refocus your energy, we all have health burdens to carry, hence, perspective to what is really the issue about the losing the lap of luxury extras the head unit may have been bought for, clearly still first world problems.
If you care to read my initial response, I am asking what you/others find beneficial over other head units, and why (if as a second last resort) not changing head units is not considered. In no way did I direct others to take a particualr action. I think you put the cart before the horse, my friend.
Totally petty to us as the consumer, I am sure they have there reasons.
It"s good to get insight from others, I have turned down using a sponsored HHK2 over keeping my bought Roam, as I have all the functionality I need. Hence asking the why.
Not sure how it is taken as a criticism. Asking for anothers opinion turns into an attack whereas its requesting insight rsther than making assumptions.
