Specialized new road bike launch today

Bikes are reportedly under embargo until 9/22 and 10/9 for Pro / Expert level…

I’m not gonna violate their embargo request (even though I am not bound by it since I am not a journalist or shop owner / employee), but expect more info to leak shortly, no later than the next race day in the TdF (similar to how they previewed their e-bike last year).

How old is the current Roubaix design? didn’t they just release the current design in 2019?

The current/new Roubaix was released just over a year ago, so not likely to be changing:

Hmmmm…

I’m still hoping for a new Crux…have been waiting to buy one but may wait until next “season” (!!!).

If it is the email I got yesterday it is the new ebike. It looks sexy for sure.

Word on the streets here is that it is a road bike. it is not UCI legal though, so probably something silly light or silly fast.

(this was meant as a reply to noah, not eric…)

The highly reliable (not sarcasm, comes from a source with direct knowledge) info I have is that an insanely light road bike, below weight limit in all sizes, is coming soon.

Whether or not this particular announcement is about that bike, I can’t say.

If the rumours are true it’s a little bit of a circle jerk. The original lightweight bike Tarmac becomes more areo (and heavier) and replaces the aero bike Venge. Now that the new areo and not super lightweigt Tarmac is ‘too heavy’ they introduce a new lightweight bike… We will see.

BUT I’m super excited about it. I hope it’s not UCI legal - just show us what tech is capable of if there are no rules and push the boundaries! Probably at a price point that is crazy enough that I will never be tempted.

For the racing cyclist, meh. From a recreational perspective though, lightweight bikes are much more enjoyable to ride. Especially short distances or with frequent stops.

Good point. Lightweight bike ftw! Easier to lift on and off the car that is parked a few km away from the cafe and faster acceleration infront of the cafe back to the car.

Reminds me of segment creep in cars. They tend to get bigger with each release and eventually migrate up to the next class size. The ancient Accord to the latest don’t even seem like they could be the same other than the name. So a new car takes over the old space, like the Civic.

Same here it seems, in the aero vs weight direction.

Like with the Shiv Tri, Specialized deserves credit for finally saying “why should we care about UCI regulations? The people we are making these bikes for don’t need to adhere to them, so let’s give them a bike for them.”

Now we can all debate the performance benefits of a lighter bike, but it remains the one metric we can all sense. Pick the bike up and go “whoa!” And we all do it when a buddy gets a new bike. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

A stock 13lbs bike using standard components is an impressive accomplishment (if pricey). It was not long ago that a 1kg frame was the gold standard…Specialized has reportedly chopped that almost in half.

I think the feature creep analogy is a good one…go look at the original RAV4 vs. the current model. Night and day difference and totally different concepts.

That said, I do think there is a small difference here (and admittedly some of this is marketing speak)…but these new bikes are not designed to be race bikes. No teams will be riding them, you won’t see them in the Tour, etc.

If Specialized can maintain this distinction, it will be the first time I can think of that a performance oriented bike has not been marketed as a race bike.

If true, the effort needed to peg a non-race bike with a focus on the rider, that isn’t the “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday” approach is pretty cool, IMO.

Sounds a good deal like the 1st and 2nd gen Emonda, both of which are great bikes with a focus on weight and ride, with no consideration for aero. Either way, can’t wait to hear more about it and maybe ride one some time.

Anyone have the webinar link?

Except I just bought one of those in the form of a Gravel bike with road wheels. So maybe a endurance geometry, but also wider clearance so one could put gravel wheels on if they wanted to?

That’s pretty much what I got with my T-Lab X3 and a set of Nox/Chris King wheels shod with 32mm Conti GP5000TL. It’s such a comfortable ride and I can swap back over to the Mavics and mix it up.
