Silca Super Secret Chain Lube

Only thing I’ll add is that sometimes a bit of a crust develops on the end of the twist cap, so be sure to scrape that off with your fingernail.

Where are you finding this? I can only have one gear item selected as a Cycling Default

App or web. Whichever is stopping you, try the other one. I think Mobile Connect is the one that works, but might have it backwards.

Thanks! I went on the Android App and was able to add multiple other gear to cycling.

Hi there just started using SSS, 1st week really love it. It last me 420km before reapplication. So after Sunday long ride I just wiped the chain with rag, spray a tiny degreaser onto rag and wipe ospw and a bit of cassette. Everything looks quite clean . Reapply SSS and left it 24hours to dry. So today I do TR workout and the wax flakes are falling onto floor as expected. Not worry about it as it’s because of reapplication but what worries me is when I touch my chain and casette it’s quite dirty with black waxy thing but no grease. Is it normal or have I do anything wrong?

Why you using degreaser? Theres no grease

The chain lube (liquid chain wax) has additives. The additive is black in color. This is normal and not dirt or grease.

Alex-

We’ve had success with Ceramicspeed UFO in MN conditions. Similar effectivity, but with no gunk buildup and works great year round. Works particularly well on MTB and gravel. Going on two years with no chain or drivetrain replacement. ALWAYS apply inside above 60 degrees at least the night before a ride (I’ve witnessed a panic application and it was a disaster). Re-apply one drip to top of chain (cross-chained) every 6-8 hours of riding. Only perform a chain cleaning ‘reset’ after muddy or wet ride otherwise a quick wipe with the cloth is all that’s needed.

Thank you. After today morning ride I touch my chain again and it still a little black on my finger. It worries me a bit because after last time first application whenever I touch the chain my finger stays clean. I suppose the black wax will go away after 1-2rides?

You don’t really want it to go away. The additives in the wax help reduce friction and increase longevity of the wax…

Like above you don’t want it to go away.
If it bothers you can wipe the outside of the chain. The rollers are the main part of the chain that wears first. This is where you want the wax to be. Both inside and outside the rollers.
The other option is to use clear paraffin wax. It will not have the black additives. It will be not quite as good, but pretty close.

thank you. I suppose I’m just worried a bit because this time my finger is black unlike first application where my finger is sparkling clean :joy:

Photos might be good as I’m not sure what level of black you’re talking about. It might be that the chain wasn’t clean enough, or the degreaser had broken down the SSS and it’s now attracting more dirt. In my experience it’s one of the cleaner lubes so noticing it as black would be a problem somewhere

Stop using degreaser on the chain….that is likely contributing to the black residue on your chain.

There is no need for degreaser on a waxed chain.

Reminds me of a guy I set up with a wax system, sent him out with a bottle of UFO Drip and UFO Clean and clear instructions. He turned up a few months later for an unrelated issue and the whole drive train was black and the chain past 0.5%. I was very annoyed and asked him why he’d gone back to wet lube and killed the chain in such a short time! His answer - “I haven’t, I’ve been using the stuff you gave me!”

How he’d been using it was the problem. I’d said “give the chain a quick wipe with a microfibre cloth if it looks a little grubby, if it’s really got filthy spray the UFO Clean on, give it time to work then rinse off completely, dry the chain and re-apply”. What he’d been doing is combining the two approaches…spraying on UFO Clean, wiping the chain down and re-applying! Using a product designed to melt wax, leaving it on the chain and then adding wax had the expected results.

I must admit though, I was surprised how filthy it was…you’d think a cleaner might help keep things clean!

I don’t use degreaser on my chain

I remember from one of the Silca videos on YT that Josh boiled water and poured it over the chain (only the chain, no cassette) The water must have been between 80-90 C. After that he applied the SSCL again. No degreaser was used.

That‘s what I do. If it‘s really dirty I add a drop of dish soap.

Chains are dried before emerging in the wax.

As far as the boiled water over a waxed chain, it doesn’t really work. I’ve even boiled a chain for several minutes and the did the mineral spirits and alcohol jars and there was a significant amount of black debris in the jars. My concern was if the boiling water can’t remove the internal roller wax at 215 degrees F, how is 175 F wax going to remove/ replace/ refresh my internal roller wax?

I don’t think it’s going to do all of this at 100%. I do note, it will extend the life of your chain and other drive train components a lot better than conventional wet lubes.
I use the boiling water poured into a tray method. Due to the now panic over parts shortages due to tariffs, I measured my 4 chains in rotation on my road bike. At approx 6 thousand miles each, my park gauge will not even begin to go in between links. With wet lube the chains seem to stretch / wear out at about 10 thousand miles.
