Shoes Outdoor ride

On a ride i experienced acute severe pain 9 on 1-10 along the outer edge of both feet. I experienced it 40 miles into a ride after stopping for a minute. No pain until the stop. Thought it would pass and costed down a half mile. I stopped after 10 minutes to take shoes off and sit with due to excruciating pain. 30 minutes later I could pedal but in much discomfort.
Foot swelling? Never had anything like this happen. Big difference was higher sustained objective cadence 90-110 and a new set of shoes but same model as roached pair they replaced.
Why would pain begin that far into a ride and that gast? What causes that? Fluids, soft tissue or bone ?

You figure that out I’ll buy you a beverage of your choice. This happens to the outside of my left foot after 35 miles with most of my shoes, even though they are the same shoe, set up exactly the same by a fitter. One pair is just fine no issues. Same thing with different model shoes. Mtn and road. Front metatarsal joint little toe, more on the top than the side.

The best fix for me is a higher arch piece in that shoe. Not perfect but better.

I even cut a hole in a shoe in that spot and still got pain.

Do you wear the same shoes when riding indoors, also? If so, any issues when doing that?

With me I can’t ride indoors more than 1-1/2 hours at a time. I hate riding indoors. When young, i did. I am old and not into mega torture any more. So there’s not enough time to get to that point.

I had that same issue and ultimately solved it. It was due to stressing the tendon/ligament that connects to the boney protrusion just at the base of the little toe on the outside edge of the foot. I found that by orienting my shoe/insole/cleat positions to put more weight/stress towards the big-toe side of the foot (which is stronger) and off of the outer side of the foot, the problem was cured. Look at your current insole and I believe you will find that there is a much lesser imprint on the big-toe side of the insole.

I’d think that your cleats are too far over to one side ‘for your feet’. I’ve had pain like that years ago, and it was on a pair of shoes I considered my ‘backup shoes’. The pain was very surprising, but it seemed that I had little to no support during active pedaling, and when I stopped, the muscles were relaxing and that was causing the pain.

Seeing a podiatrist, if you have or can find a good one would be helpful, but trying to adjust cleats, OR use different insoles. (Are the shoes too wide for your feet or too tight?)

Sometimes, a tighter fit or pressure points can cause that pain, especially if the shoes aren’t fully broken in yet. Try loosening them on longer rides and see if that helps.

The problem is probably caused by supination. To put it mildly I’m a big big supinator. When I ran I could kill a pair of running shoes before they even got dirty. Running on the side of my shoes instead of the bottom. Even in high school the outside heel of all my shoes became a bevel. Foot correction shoes, wide shoes, soft shoes nothing really worked. For some reason Saucony shoes worked the best. Of only I was a pronator. If my knees could take it I would have a big wedge in my shoes.

For the OP: Plantar fasciitis? That can be really painful, and almost debilitating. I had that 2 years ago, and the pain was near excruciating. Occasionally I was driven near to tears. Could also be peroneal tendonitis.

See a podiatrist, or sports medicine specialists.

Are you using plastic sole riding shoes? (Inside joke)

None of the above. No pain with dress shoes, running shoes, boots or casual shoes.
It only happens after 35 miles, in all but 1 pair of road shoes. I have 3 pairs of the same road shoes all set up the same by a fitter.
It’s now happening with my new 2FO shoes I’m using for gravel.
It’s something I have learned to live with. If I have to stop and take my shoe off after a few hours it’s ok. A minute lost will not make a whole lot of difference. Unless I’m trying to be competitive then “shut up foot and pedal”

Edit: I sometimes think since it’s only my left foot that it has to do with an injury to my right calf. I did rip all the muscles off my Achilles tendon. Calf has never been as strong as before that.

You can also try putting shoe stretchers in your shoes when not wearing them.

Have you got a MTB? Swap your pedals and shoes onto that and do a similar ride and tell us if you have the same issue.
