This is very good advice. Where shoe companies mislead the buying public is with “wide” shoes. Very few wide shoes exist. The majority if “wide shoes are actually high volume uppers built on the standard last which dies not provide foot support for either the 1st or 5th metatarsal. Very hard to go wrong with Lake or Bont.

The Lake shoe was indeed a better fit than the Shimanos. Way less total volume in shoe. I still think I need to size down as the ankle on the Lake was looser than I would like. Going to try ordering the Lake in a 40 and a 40.5 to see which works better. Overall I think just grabbing the wide from Lake in my normal size will be the right move.
To add to that: Lake has different lasts. I am a bit too lazy to look up their nomenclature, but I think their tightest one is called “race”, then “competition” and my sneaker-style shoe is roomier still.
Bont has other fit options for their more expensive shoes, including Extra Wide and Asian Fit. I haven’t tried those and compared them to my Wide shoes, so I can’t comment on the details.
