Hi there,
I’d like to hear your thoughts from anyone who has tried them.
I need to understand if there’s something wrong with my cleat/pontoon setup or if these shoes are difficult by design.
I’ve bought the RX910 and, yes, they are stiff, well connected as advertised and really comfortable, but the 4° of float that should be there with the cleats has almost disappeared, and clipping in is insanely difficult compared with any other MTB/gravel shoe without the pontoon system, making uphill starts almost impossible. yeah I guess racing you aren’t supposed to clip off during ascent?
The cleats sit about 1 mm below the rubber part of the pontoon, so everything feels like it’s “rubbing”, even with the XT pedal tension backed all the way off they reaming difficult to clip in, while usally is extremly easy.
I’m using XT pedals and Shimano SH51 cleats. I also tried moving the new cleats to my old shoes and there’s no issue with the cleats.

I purchased the rx910 a few weeks ago and noticed the same clipping in, which I did expect some after reading reviews. The shoes are so phenomenal compared to to my prior shoes that I felt the clip in change to be an easy trade off
I haven’t adjusted my pedals at all and feel like my float is similar to my previous Shimano rx801 shoes. I feel like they are probably about 20% harder to clip in.
On gravel, this is fine because even steep gravel road ascents I don’t find too terrible. I’m an inexperienced single track rider and recently moved from Texas to Washington state, which even my gravel route has some steep single track sections. On those, the clipping in is harder, however I struggled even my last shoes lol.
I (think) I’m getting a second set of the shoes for Christmas, but the MX910 version, for dirtier conditions and mtb/single track. As much as it’s a bit harder, I think the biggest problem is still needing practice clipping in on steeper ascents.
if you’d like to post photos of the bottom of your shoes, I can compare to mine and post mine as well. I think I have the same pedals and cleats as you.
Circling back to this topic again.
I turned down the resistance in my pedals “-“ by one click and it helped to allow a little more free play when pedaling and clipping in just a tad.
With that in mind, I am cognizant of the fact that I am bad at clipping back in on technical terrains. It appears that Shimano has recently released a new MT-001 cleat I am going to try out. This allows for many more variations of clipping in, but the same single release for unclipping. This will be good to prevent accidental unclips, while hopefully helping to clip in on more technical terrains. It’ll be a bit before I ride outside due to weather, but I might still get a slight feel for them just while clipping in and out of the trainer. I’ll be installing them on my MX910 and if I like them enough, get a second set for the RX910.
