Saris H3 Discussion/Issues

Saris shipped me a replacement before asking me to send back mine so if you deal with them I’m sure they will do the same. Not sure what Clever would do

I will see what both say.

I ran into the same problem. Have you solved it in the meantime? I have an Android phone and Ant+ dongle on PC. Trainer is H2.

Not yet.

Today had a change to try update with Android 10 - still no success.

Had a ticket with support and they relied on Google for this issue for older version of Android.

Will see what is their comment for Android 10.

It would be better to start separate ticket. Maybe this will help to speedup them…

Thanks. Will probably give it another go before filling a ticket. Have two insurance claims to sort out after vacations and some Christmas shopping too. This has a slightly lower priority but will let you know!

Check this recent Youtube video about the knocking noise.

My new H3 now has the same knocking as of today. Here is my reply the youtube post.
My new H3 trainer has the exact same noise after 15hrs of use in the past 2 weeks. The noise still happens when you’re not pedaling & the flywheel is coasting. At first I thought it was a loose thru-axle but the timing of the noise is not similar to my cadence. When I stopped pedaling the trainer still made the noise. For me the noise starts after about 15min of riding & continues thru out the ride. It starts with slow clicking/knocking sound then the clicking/knocking noise gets faster. Most of my rides average 150-180 watts & max out around 600. So not much stress of the trainer.
The H3 seemed to have the least problems of all smart trainers this year. Now this!
After a firmware update & an update by another training platform the trainer is very accurate & used to be pretty quiet until today.

It’s something in the trainer that is loose or out of spec, likely one of the pulley wheels, because those spin with the belt and flywheel regardless if you pedal or not.

Wow, listening to that knocking noise, I’m feeling good about my decision to just return the H3 I ordered which was damaged in shipping and hold off until next year on any smart trainer. That should give Saris some time to work the wrinkles out of the new design.

Yes it’s sad.

The H3 had the best reviews & least problems during the roll out.

Saris & Zwift fixed their software problems last week so the H3 worked perfectly until the knocking started.

Trainer Road has always kept on top of their software updates.

This knocking problem was never mentioned in reviews, maybe because reviewers didn’t use their trainer for more than a few hours.

To be honest I am not too worried about it as I know clevertraining will make it right. I believe Saris has good customer service.

I rode today and it works fine besides the clicking noise which only happened when I was not pedaling.

some people commented about a loose dropout spacer in the h3 that caused the knocking sound and went away after tightening it on H3 review on DCR. Do you know if that fixes your problem?

I wish!

I checked that when the knocking first started since the noise was slow like cadence.

But the knocking eventually got faster & knocks when not pedaling.

Thanks fo the suggestion.

I had some similar noises on my kickr that were due to a ‘loose’ QR. It was tight, but needed to be tighter to avoid the creaking.
Some questions - does it make the noise while coasting? If so, does it make the noise while coasting if you get off the bike?
I hope you get this resolved - my H3 just arrived and I’ll be getting it set up soon.

12-16-2019 Update
I was contacted by Saris Support.
They do not know what causes the knocking/clicking noise problem yet.
They are sending a replacement while I keep riding the original unit.
They said that riding the noisy unit will not damage it. Not sure how they know that.
So Saris Support was fast & easy to deal with.
I hope the new trainer doesn’t develop the same noise.

I went through 3 of them.

First one had belt noise and the knock developed after a week when pedaling or coasting (not related to a certain pedal stroke)
Second one had belt noise, no knock (although I only used it for 2 rides)
Third one has no belt noise and no knock yet after 2 weeks

Good to know.

Sort of !!!

Did you happen to buy through clever training? I’m considering buying through them as there’s a 20% off but i’m not sure how easy it will be to deal with exchange if there’s noise.

Any warranty exchange would be done through Saris, at least that’s the way I did mine.

With clever within 60 days you can send it back to them and as soon as they get the old one they send you the new one. With defective item they typically cover the shipping both ways.

I would still do it through Saris, because Saris will send you a new one before making you send back the old one, and I wouldn’t want to stick Clever with a defective trainer and have them cover shipping for something they can’t re-sell. It’s Saris’s fault that the trainers are faulty, so I’ll let them cover the costs of fixing it instead of sticking a third party vendor with that cost for something that isn’t their fault
