Saris H3 Discussion/Issues

The manual also it does not mention whether the trainer will sleep automatically after workout or if one should unplug it after each ride.”

My H1 goes to sleep after a period of time, doesn’t take long before the LED goes out. Wakes up on a few pedal turns, I’ve had it plugged in and On for months and months, probably in the year or two I’ve had it, it’s probably only been turned Off for cassette cleaning.

The only way to get rid of the belt noise is open the unit and scuff that upper pulley to give it some texture. It WILL eliminate the noise, otherwise its not going to fix itself.

Good news: its easy to do and will take only 10-15 minutes
Bad news: its not something customers should have to do IMO, but I digress

Have you actually done that or did this really solve problem for anyone?

Some users have done it, and the factory is now doing it on new units. As reported by @Cleanneon98, it does solve the slip and noise issue.

Disclaimer: I received my H3 today and have only done the ramp test so far. I had the H3 connected to my iPhone and the S-Works cranks to the headunit. The cranks were consistently underreporting between 10-25 Watts. I did the spindown on the H3 but didn’t calibrate the cranks. After I did that the H3 and the PM were more or less converging. Maybe try to calibrate your powermeter and see if that helps?

My experience with a proper spindown after being warmed up and calibrating my stages, the trainer will under-read during the first 10 minuets by 5-10w, then even out, then over-read by 5-10w by the end, for a 60-90min workout this has been the case

I do not do a spindown every ride, only once a month or two, but I do calibrate the Stages PM before each ride since I use that to control the workouts via Powermatch

I don’t, the NG powermeters do the zero offset automatically once you stop pedalling.

I’ve also personally had the best luck with calibrating using the Rouvy app. I’ve used the Powertap app, Zwift, Saris app, and the Rouvy app seems to give the most consistent power tracking compared to my Stages. It typically tracks within 1-2%, tracks lower at lower wattages and early in the workout, and higher at higher wattages and later in the workout.

Just as a reference point I did Leavitt +2 yesterday and had Alpe du Zwift running parallel. I cropped the section of the TR ride to compare to the Zwift section. The way I do this is let Stages PM the TR ride, and then have Zwift mirror the effort but using whatever power the H3 produces for the same effort.

TR portion controlled by the Stages PM gave me 255w
Zwift segment for Alpe which was mirrored by H3 was 258w

This is for a 59 minute effort with power ramping from 240 to 255 to 270w, back to 240, then 255, then again at 270.

Also generally speaking my 60-90 minute rides usually come in within 2w of each other when comparing the H3 and the Stages, with the H3 reading low in the first 1/3, even in the 2/3, and high in the 3/3 part of the ride. The only time I had an issue was when I did a spindown before warming up the trainer and for that ride it read 8w higher than the Stages (228 vs 220). Otherwise they are consistently 1-2w apart.

And for anyone wondering about sound levels, here it is running through every gear combo Di2 would allow, and with a sprint to show the remedied belt issue.

my sister just called and was having problems with pairing H2 and MacBook via BT. She had to drop off the call, and wanted to confirm that H2 has no special “Bluetooth weirdness.”

In my mind the most logical first debugging steps are:

  • confirm she doesn’t have a Bluetooth bike computer turned on (pretty sure she has a 520 or 520plus)
  • force quit any apps on phone (TrainerRoad, Rouvy, etc)
  • try again on MacBook
  • reboot MacBook and power cycle H2
  • if above steps fail, have her reset MacBook Bluetooth and repair TR app again

Good thoughts and direction.

Additionally, here is the link to the light info that may help:
https://www.cycleops.com/Uploads/PDF/CycleOps-Manuals/Hammer-Magnus-LED-Combinations.pdf

I’d start with:

  1. power cycle all devices in range
  2. don’t start any apps
  3. power cycle the trainer
  4. watch the lights on the trainer

Thanks Chad! I’m having fun being her coach, and also her IT guy  Next up is helping her buy a cable from monoprice.com to connect laptop to TV.

I am going through a similar setup for a friends wife. She really got into road riding this last summer, and wants to dive into Zwift. So, trainer shopping now, tech support soon :stuck_out_tongue:

PS, monoprice is such a great resource. Crazy good pricing.

So I have an H3 with the belt/pulley issue…Thanks for the video of the sound, this was very helpful. I also feel a very strong vibration through the pedals using the H3 in high gear at high fly wheel speeds. Do other users feel this? It is feels like a grinding sensation. I wonder if it has to do with this pulley issue?

@ kybrown17
I have this same issue with my H3 and my power meter using powermatch- TR incorrectly reports my H3 as the power source. I contacted TR support and they said it was an intermittent dropout of my power meter causing the issue. It is still unresolved. Note: Powermatch was still functioning normally and the actual power source was still my power meter controlling erg. You can verify this in the data files on your computer if you are unsure.

first time trainer user, asked her if she installed Rouvy or any other software after unboxing. Answer was no, so I believe the only app installed on iPhone is TrainerRoad.

I can feel and gear stuff when I’m in the 52x11 gear but that’s just drivetrain vibration due to the gear combo

How to get speed / distance data to display and capture by Garmin head unit? I want to use my powermeter as a source of power and Hammer as source of speed. Is that possible? When I search for new sensors it only shows Hammer as a source of power which also includes speed & cadence data.

I think that will just happen automatically if you pair the power meter and trainer, and let Power Match work.

Have you tried a workout like that yet to see the output?

It works on TrainerRoad, but not on Garmin or at least I don’t know how to achieve that. I could also sync my workouts from TR to Garmin Connect, but then I would lose all the device specific features like VO2max estimation, Training status etc.
