I will be visiting the Black Forest in Germany for about a week at the end of this month, and I may get a chance to do a couple of rides. I’ve found bot a mountain and road bike to rent, but I have no idea where to go. Does anyone here have experience riding in that part of Germany? Thanks in advance.
Its not very flat round there.
No specific advise other than if it’s similar to riding in/around Homburg just to the north there will be a maze of trails to ride. I used to stay in Homburg for work back in 2002-2004 and would rent bikes and just go…sometimes I’d be on roads but, mostly just follow a road to a trail and just see where it took me. Mind you this was pre smart phone so all I can say is it was easy to get lost back there. You’ll be fine with current tech. Just saying I bet you could ride for days and never ride the same trail/road down there. Have fun!
The Black Forest is a fairly large area, spans almost the entire South-West of Germany. Generally you will have a lot of small roads there, perfect terrain for road/gravel cycling. The city of Freiburg is the German Girona for WT road pros like Heinrich Hausler (o.k., he’s Australian … technically). the only drawback would be for MTB, they have this law that restricts biking to tracks at least 2m in width. Not sure how much this actually ignored. Just saying.
So it really depends on where one is going, Black Forest is quite diverse.
GPX files of this Gran Fondo, connecting many of the highlights in the Black Forest (road, various lengths) are available on the website, they might inspire you
I spent a week there on hols. Amazing gravel riding everywhere! Just followed my nose and explored.
Serious hills though. Quite a few 20% gravel climbs within spitting distance of my accommodation. Got the KOM on one of then. Quite proud of that.
