I put new GP5000 S TR 32mm tires on my Supersix when I bought it last November. There can’t be more than 1500 miles on them and wear indicators look OK. I noticed today that the rear only seems to have a really rough texture. Have you seen this before? I can’t imagine this is good Should I swap it out?
It’s not looking great. Do you leave the bike out in the sunlight or something? That doesn’t seem to be from normal riding wear and tear. It almost appears to be cracking / peeling. I’d recommend replacing it within the next few hundred miles.
I’d ride it. I’ve had 2-3 year old GP5000s that looked similar or wrose but still ride just fine.
That looks totally fine to me. Sometimes my tires do that, not sure why but I’ve never had any issues.
@burnett2k Nope…bike is always in the garage out of direct sunlight when I’m not riding. I’ve gone through my fair share of the prior gen GP5000 TL that would usually square off as they wore but I don’t recall seeing this before.
Thanks @mwglow15 @AJS914 I’ll keep an eye on it but probably keep riding for now.
Totally fine and has plenty of life.
Years ago, I had a pair of Specialized tires that started to look like that, which didn’t bother me, but when they started getting blebs, (they look like blisters) I was concerned but kept using them. Until a blister opened up, and then where the sidewall met the tread, there was a more pronounced groove that actually opened up on the rear tire. I literally rode them so fast they were falling apart!
Took them back to the dealer and they replaced them. So wrinkling: good, blisters: bad, open blisters: really bad. (I had 2 more Specialized tires with problems, one the entire tread started falling off, and another (Sagan - Hell Of The North tires), the black sidewall started blistering. Not the best experience with their tires, but the dealer got replacements)
If you are not getting tons of p’tures, I would continue to ride that.
Have you had the bike on a car rack where the car exhaust might have been close to the tire?
My GP5000s end up looking similar. They can last as they were expensive and haven’t done an acceptable amount of millage yet. Some brands don’t seem to do the same, I’ve got some TUFO gravel tyres that look fresh and they are 3 years old (if you ignore the all the plugs holding them together).
No, I’ve only traveled a few times with this bike and it fits easily in my car (mini vans are the best )
Swear I saw this on Reddit
Yup tried to get a second opinion before folks chimed in here. TR folks generally aren’t so there’s that
Looks odd to me, but it’s probably only the tread, which as long as it’s there, is OK. Structural issues would be more of a concern. If it was coming off the carcass in chunks, or there were areas of separation from the carcass, I’d be more concerned.
