lol @ all your puny bikes
11.1 kg
15.2 kg
13.9 kg
Just looking at what I wrote down on Strava. Some might be accurate, some not.
Enduro: 38 pounds (but I carry two pounds of spares in the SWAT, plus a water bottle)
Roadie: 16
XC: 20.2
I only ever weigh my stuff with everything except full water bottles (because that is a variable). I don’t understand bike weights without pedals, or something else.
My XC full suspension MTB is 22.5 lbs/10.2kg.
What would be a lightweight XC bike these days? Maybe not full weenie but, race ready for a:
It obviously depends on bike size (most the mega light pro’s bikes, or brand listed sizes are Small or Medium) but I think in my opinion if you are in the 11-12kg with a full suss bike you’re at the pretty racey end of the weight weenie scale.
Mine is 12.7kg and whilst not noticeably “light” compared to most. If you factor in it’s capabilities and size it compares reasonably well.
Just an opinion
I read recently that pros shoot for the low end of 22lbs with XC FS bikes. Not sure if that is with or without dropper post which some but not all pros use from my eye test while I watch races. Not sure about hardtails. 19-20lbs?
Road racing bike ALWAYS weights 6,8 - 7,0 kg including pedals, bottle cages and computer mounts. If it doesn’t, it’s not a racing bike. Even if manufacturer suggests otherwise
Tarmac SL6 Pro, my son rides wights 6,8 with 30 mm climbing wheels, 7,0 with 50 mm rolling terrain and flat race wheels. Size 54
Nowdays (disc + aero) is more like between 7 and 7.5kg. For example JA tarmac in size 52 is 7.3kg and WvA S5 weights more than 8kg…
WvA bike weights 8,14 including pedals if I’m correct. Makes very little difference in flat race. But when you go against gravity on 10-15% climb, you loose some seconds.
Probably it is not that important in those puncy climbs but can be a problem if he starts thinking (in third minute in high vo2 max effort) about racing other guys on 1kg lighter bikes…
Bianchi Oltre xr4 with pedals, bottle cages, computer mount but without the bike computer.
Prime wheels, Vittoria tires (bit heavy) with tubolito inner tubes. Ultegra di2 groupset, Pro Vibe handlebars and stem with a Selle Italia saddle. I’m pretty light myself and like to climb so want the bike to be light without breaking the bank. The dream is 6,8 kg but I don’t think I can do that with the Oltre.
Ps: Sorry for the lousy picture, it’s all I got with the current setup
And meanwhile, in the real world, we attempt to race against peeps who are 10kgs lighter than us…
#marketing #get-real
So true.
I hope I didn’t give anyone the wrong idea. I think in general too much emphasis has been focused on lightweight and just wanted to highlight real vs. marketed weights. I also think aero marketing is out of control as well but, picked weight as it’s easier to quantify.
I think it’s fine. It’s all for shits and giggles rather than d!#k swinging.
To your point, I am pretty sure my bike was advertised as 12.4kg. that’s size Medium, no pedals, cages, tyre insert, or computer. Maybe I should set 12.4kg as my goal. The trouble is the $/g equation. It’d be easy to achieve if I threw $3500 at a set of carbon wheels and an integrated bar set up.
My Kona Sutra ULTD I set up as a winter “road” bike weighed nearly 13kg before adding fenders and lights and other bits. But sure feels plush with 700x43 tires and flexy steel fork and frame and looong chain stays. Have a second pair of wheels with 2.5/2.4” tires when I want to do vo2max at 9mph. Will be a comfortable steed for PacNW winter. Thinking about getting an Aethos in spring as an experiment in juxtaposition. .
