Quitting on Ramp Test

Yeah, you are not alone. Happened to me too.
Did you do your ramp test on the day TR programmed it for you?
I find much better to do it when you feel like it, and mentally you are in a good state.
After a couple of days of Petit, and Whorl, you might want to spice up your easy week.
I use a HR monitor because I know I can usually reach approx 6 beats/min below my max before I have to stop. If it is very much lower as in my march ramp test and i have to quit , I know i will get a FTP too low ,which will affect my training on TR.
So do not dwell on not completing it. Just reschedule it .
If you have changed your trainer ,do not compare your result to your old trainer.
I know HR is unreliable as a measure in interval training, but it is useful as a guide, combined with RPE.
With experience, you will know when the workouts are set at the right intensity for you.
You say you rarely bail out, so you probably have it about right.
Good luck with your next ramp, keep us posted how it goes.

It is so weird when people bail in the 18th minute or later! (By ā€˜bail’ I mean that they stop despite being able to go on).

I mean, there is enough pain involved in getting to the 18th minute to make you think twice before deciding you’ll be doing it again? I’m not trying to be critical, it’s just that if I were to bail, it would be either before the test (done that) or quite early.

Thanks for the support guys! It’s good to see I’m not alone. I might retest in a week or so after a couple days off. I’ll likely use the feedback that someone mentioned of not doing the test in the morning.

I usually train in the morning and it’s fine, I just think I need more time to warm up in the morning than usual, which is not conductive to a great ramp test.

I can’t speak for anyone else but I’m not this lucid in the 18th or 19th minute.

Fair point. Maybe it’s just instinct.

I think most of my true bails (say before 18) are days where I know I’m cooked coming in and I probably shouldn’t assess in the first place. I probably need to get better about judging that beforehand… I tested Monday and bailed at 17:45 then struggled with a single SS interval after. I thought about it, and determined that I hadn’t honored my recovery very well, so I took three days off the bike entirely… rode easy Friday and assessed again yesterday and got to 19:37 and then did 3x10 SS… I was just cooked Monday and had no business testing.

You know what, sometimes this works, and sometimes it really doesn’t. I’ve had good and bad assessments on days I thought I was cooked. I’m starting to think it’s always worth the attempt, because sometimes you find grit or determination or raw power you didn’t know was there, and that’s hugely motivating. If you find nothing and it goes terribly, well, you knew you were cooked to begin with, so nothing lost.

I have had a stressful week and just bailed on my ramp test. It started ok and then came to hard stop fast. My ā€œnewā€ FTP is 197 from 211. I think I will keep the 211 and see how I get on.

The last time my FTP went down, it was about 3 watts and the test after that I set a new PB to 211. I doubt I have lost 14 watts since my last test. Well, I hope
