Product Request: Set FTP Goal

With the AI update, would folks find having a way to input your goal FTP and a plan set to hit it a useful feature? Obviously, the goal you input would need to have realistic timing. The idea came to mind because I’m seeing some questionable changes to my AI FTP predicition after outdoor rides and gym sessions (e.g. FTP was 3% increase after my last TR ride then saw a 3% decrease after a gym session where I logged zero sets).

I still love the AI prediction, but I’m itching to hit 3+w/kg.

Xert’s forecast AI can do this, but seems to build very aggressive schedules to achieve modest gains.

Something to consider: What you want your FTP to be might not be physiologically possible, there may be no plan to get you there, and is in some ways irrelevant. You might be topped out at 3.0 w/Kg, someone else might be topped out at less, someone else more. And I don’t think the AI can decipher what your physiological ceiling is.

IMO, it’s more about doing the work and making the most of the time you have available to dedicate to training. FTP is a byproduct and something you use to set training zones / pacing.

I can see it now - I want my FTP to be 400W - Why can’t I get there???

Totally. Yeah, the input would need to be realistic and TR would either accept or decline it. I’d love a 400w FTP as a 59kg, 30-something year old rider, but alas, that is not in the cards!

It should be possible to model average long term performance improvement, for a given volume/age/gender. Probably also add a consistency factor. And then map that against your current and past FTPs, to generate an offset for whether you’re above/below/at the average.

From there, you could see a rough outline of what it might take to get there. Outline would probably be mostly volume based, since that’s easy enough to map out over time, and such a primary determiner of performance.

The error bars would be pretty wide, and I think people would complain a lot about being presented with that data.

I know we had a podcast that covered what it took to achieve 3/4/5 wkg, but I’m now curious about plateaus by volume, gender, and age.
