Pro Cycling Thread 2024

I’m surprised there aren’t more post finish line crashes, especially on bunch sprints when a snap/clique of photographers are taking up half the road mere meters past the line.

Maybe it’s 30 or more meters, but they always have to swerve and merge to avoid them.

I had to search the name as the link is not working but :astonished:

That video shows how brutal the crash was. I’m not blaming the people standing there. The organizers just seem to have some issue every day.

Intent is not to draw up discussion of a 7 time non-tour winner, but I recall even back in 01 and/or 02 Armstrong referring to the Vuelta as “janky”. I’m not certain if those comments shaped my vision, but it seems like every year I’ve followed for the last 2 decades that some really poorly organized crap happens at least every few days. It dwarfs the issues of the Giro and Tour combined, impressive really.

Wtf indeed. Whoever designed that finish chute needs to be fired ASAP. They should be sued their ass off. It’s complete negligence and malpractice.

Hopefully no lasting impact from the crash. Agree with others here it is a design flaw of the finish

Optimistic about what this means for the race over the coming weeks, lots still to be ridden but from a potential excitement factor this leaves the door open much more than a dominant Jumbo showing

Agreed, good for the race that Remco’s got a little buffer to work with at the start but overall I’m still pretty bullish on Jumbo. Remco has a pattern of coming in red hot in the first week and fading in the 3rd and Jonas has been the exact opposite. Roglic has had some pretty big issues with 3rd week weakness in the past, but he was starting to turn things around on Remco last year before he crashed.

We’ve only scratched the surface of the race though so anything could happen.

Man Jumbo need to rethink their strategy, there was no good reason to chase Jonas with Sepp and Roglic, make Remco close that gap or let Jonas take time. Then they do a lead out with Kuss on the last bit while Roglic was out of position… If they continue like that Remco will gain bonus seconds and put time into roglic/ Jonas in the TT, then the only hope is that he cracks on the Tourmalet or Angliru stage… But lets see how it develops only 3rd stage and 1st proper one. Also lets hope that remco is fine after that crash…

Couldn’t find a video that tracked him all the way from finish line to accident. How close was the crash to the line? Looked like he rode hands off bars celebrating for a good way after the finish line. Of course we want riders to celebrate a win, just wondering if he celebrated a bit too long without paying attention to his surroundings, then ran out of room to stop. If the finish chute was unusually close to the line then that’s definitely on the organisers, but if it was in the normal range for a mountain top finish (which presumably is often closer than on a flat sprint finish where they’re expecting a big bunch arriving together at 60kph) then it’s partly on Remco as well.

I saw this one, he doesn’t seem to have his hands off the bars overly long after the line.

I thought “a bit long celebration” but not overly so. The trouble was a rather short finish are and the fact that the road went downhill when they crossed the line. So instead of slowing down while celebrating, he sped up. Combined with the short finish area and bob is not your uncle. Definitely on the organizers and they really haven’t been doing a good job so far this year. And the Vuelta has a reputation for that too.

Thanks, that gives much better perspective :+1:

Does look pretty tight and he didn’t celebrate long so guess it’s on the organisers. Be interested to see similar camera angle for other mountain top finishes and whether this is normal or if there’s normally a lot more space or at least better signage. There must be some mountain top finishes where there’s very little room to work with.

I disagree with this take. The burden of safety shouldn’t be on the shoulders of a rider who is glycogen and oxygen depleted. This is on the organizers

Think about your mental capabilities at the end of a race or a hard vo2 interval

It wasn’t a take, it was a question as I hadn’t seen continuous footage from finish to crash. I now have and agree it’s on the organisers.

My point was that regardless of the distance if it’s possible then the organizers made a mistake

Correct, especially if they put it on a mountain top, but still make it downhill by not putting it on the crest…

So he’s coming over the line at maybe 40km/h, celebrates, and then have what, 10 meters to stop the bike?

This is 100% on the organisers.

Unless they’re racing in Zwift then there has to be some finite distance within which they need to stop!
