Power meter or direct drive smart trainer....I can only get one

This winter I’m intending on doing a TrainerRoad plan to drop some weight and get my power up for spring, however at the moment I do not have a power meter and only a dumb wheel on Elite fluid trainer. I can get a power meter or a direct drive smart trainer, but not both. My gut is telling me that the power meter will be a better all around training tool as I will also be able to use it outside. But the direct drive smart trainer will probably be much more enjoyable to use over my current wheel on non-smart trainer, which means I will be more likely to stick to my winter training.
