Pogi is a freak; or, read this if you were feeling good about your numbers

Certainly not the first analysis, but interesting breakdown of Pogacar’s recent comments about his power and training zones. ~450 watt FTP and “zone 2” that extends to >5 w/kg, plus an apparently freakish ability to clear lactate.

I came away with a different perspective. The numbers are extreme, but as is alluded to in the article, they are possibly not so extreme among his peers. What stood out to me from the interview was his mental fortitude and psychology, which seemed to set him apart.

Have we read the same article? The Escape Collective extrapolated Pogi’s performance based on the power numbers by Derek Gee. On one climb, Gee did sweet spot whereas Pogacar was in high-Z2 to low-Z3. That seems like a massive advantage to me.

The only thing we can speculate is whether Pogacar’s Z2 extends unusually high and his FTP is not as high as we infer using 75 % FTP as upper boundary for Z2.

I have a different perspective, but in any case, what impressed me from the interview was how he appears to be able to maintain leadership in a high-pressure, world class competitive environment while being calm, flexible, and positive. I find it very impressive at age 26 no less.

Depends how we’re defining the top of Z2.

If it’s LT1/VT1 then it could well be significantly higher than 75% of FTP in genetic freaks (in the good way)

At his weight that puts his zone 2 is 5 watts/kg. I’d be thrilled if I could hold 5 w/kg for a 25 min climb these days

Who cares? Just another Mauro Gianetti science project.
