Paris Olympics 2024 (spoilers)

I was probably seeing part of the broken rim

that’s a long run - single track, in mtb bike shoes, bike shouldered. ouch

It was me of the things Pidcock got lucky with. His flat was very close to the pit stop AND he was able to ride it in.

I know you are kidding around, but many of us have GAS not only for bike gear but other stuff. Which makes one start to wonder about the most expensive Summer Olympic sports in terms of equipment required?

When you mentioned archery, my first thought was: “HA!! Check out the prices for customized Olympic quality trap/skeet shotguns”!!!

We know about the bikes pushing over 10K. Probably double or triple that if you include some of the custom one off stuff that isn’t actually available (UCI rules to the contrary).

How about carbon fiber shells and oars? Not cheap. Then there are sailboats used in other events.

In the end though, am thinking the horse riding events could well be the topper in terms of overall cost. If you think gels and carbs are expensive try feeding a horse!!!

Yeah, I think the equestrian events would top the “equipment” cost list, but it is a living creature, too.

I texted the same joke about archery to a group of riding buddies….turns out one of them actually tried it for awhile. He said he spent over $4k in equipment….and he still sucked (his words, not mine).

Only 4k to still sucks sounds like a pretty good deal when you consider how much most cyclists spend on their gear! lol

Anyone catch the guy in men’s tri race that full on puked right after he crossed the line? Was shocked at how much vomit came out!

Yeah, probably too much seine river water.

Maybe a bit too serious about “fueling the ride”?

Ledecky leaving everyone for dust in the 1500m with her two beat kick.

I gave two beat a go in the short course training pool today, definitely tougher on the arms but my pace was good and HR lower. So maybe makes sense for snails-pace old guys too.

That middle pic is my Summer Olympics kink….pics of Ledecky with a lead so big, she looks like she is in the pool by herself.

Katie Ledecky is amazing but tbf womens 1500 is a super new event. I’m pretty sure up until Tokyo 1500 was men’s only. And that trickles down to all the developing athletes. So there’s really only 8 years of history in the event, so in the next few years I bet it will get much more competitive.

She’s truly amazing though. I was forced into a few 1500m when i was teenage swimmer. It’s so hard. Hard to describe how hard it is. It’s kind of my benchmark for suffering, when I’m in pain on the trainer it’s a mantra: “this is hard, but not as bad as the mile”

The men’s 10K yes running was amazing.

I don’t know what’s happening, did we do it?

This might be my favorite video of these Olympics. Pure joy.

Yeah but she also dominates the 800m of the 30 fastest times ever 29 are from ledecky the only other swimmer on there is summer McIntosh and that time is 7 seconds slower then ledeckys world record… I don’t think there was ever a more dominant swimmer over and distance then her on the 800 and 1500.

Katie won’t get any competition until she ages out. While the Olympics have lagged in adding the 1500m, it has been in the swimming world for generations. The 1968 women’s 800m gold (plus two other golds) winner, Debbie Wyer, said the 1500m was her best event.

Part of FINA’s and the IOC’s reasoning was that a minimum number of countries needed to compete, I don’t know what the numbers were for total countries, but where it has been raced, there has been competition. It doesn’t have the same appeal at the swimmer level as otehr events. My wife podiumed the event in college in the 80s - because there were times when there were only 3 swimmers.

BTW, the swim world has been in awe of her since she was 16. Check out her wikipedia article.

One example:
2013 World Championships
Gold medal – first place16x16 400 m freestyle 3:59.82 (NR)
Gold medal – first place16x16 800 m freestyle 8:13.86 (WR)
Gold medal – first place16x16 1500 m freestyle 15:36.53 (WR)
Gold medal – first place16x16 4 × 200 m freestyle 7:45.14

For anyone watching Peacock for the Men’s race, there are two streams (depending on your subscription maybe). One is labeled "TV’. the other is not. Same coverage, but the “TV” version does not have the commercials for me. I’m on the “no ad” subscription. I’m still getting NBC promo ads.

And we’re off!

Correction: still getting some ads on the TV version. No rhyme or reason as far as I can tell.

Can confirm I have access to both streams on the cheaper ‘ads included’ tier

So it’s a sprint stage then? 265km of nothing then boom?

Not sure I’m up for watching the whole lot if so…

My guess is a strong man break after 200km. Bob is predicting the early break (non dangerous) could get a 10 minute lead.
