Paris Olympics 2024 (spoilers)

Yeah but she also dominates the 800m of the 30 fastest times ever 29 are from ledecky the only other swimmer on there is summer McIntosh and that time is 7 seconds slower then ledeckys world record… I don’t think there was ever a more dominant swimmer over and distance then her on the 800 and 1500.

Katie won’t get any competition until she ages out. While the Olympics have lagged in adding the 1500m, it has been in the swimming world for generations. The 1968 women’s 800m gold (plus two other golds) winner, Debbie Wyer, said the 1500m was her best event.

Part of FINA’s and the IOC’s reasoning was that a minimum number of countries needed to compete, I don’t know what the numbers were for total countries, but where it has been raced, there has been competition. It doesn’t have the same appeal at the swimmer level as otehr events. My wife podiumed the event in college in the 80s - because there were times when there were only 3 swimmers.

BTW, the swim world has been in awe of her since she was 16. Check out her wikipedia article.

One example:

Gold medal – first place16x16 1500 m freestyle 15:36.53 (WR)
Gold medal – first place16x16 4 × 200 m freestyle 7:45.14

For anyone watching Peacock for the Men’s race, there are two streams (depending on your subscription maybe). One is labeled "TV’. the other is not. Same coverage, but the “TV” version does not have the commercials for me. I’m on the “no ad” subscription. I’m still getting NBC promo ads.

And we’re off!

Correction: still getting some ads on the TV version. No rhyme or reason as far as I can tell.

Can confirm I have access to both streams on the cheaper ‘ads included’ tier

“A perfect route for Pedersen” - C Boardman

So it’s a sprint stage then? 265km of nothing then boom?

Not sure I’m up for watching the whole lot if so…

My guess is a strong man break after 200km. Bob is predicting the early break (non dangerous) could get a 10 minute lead.

I actually agree with him. This is a great course for pederson. Just depends on how recovered he is from that crash in the Tour

Maybe you’re thinking of Jasper?

Aaaaaaaahh!

:man_facepalming:

Not getting much coverage on the beeb anyway, that I can find. I’ll have another look at 16:00, as they’re predicting a finish around 16:30

LOL…woke up, checked the coverage (ugh…Bob Roll on both options) and the break had ~12 mins. Went to take a shower, knowing it wouldn’t last (despite Roll’s dire warnings) and came back to find the gap down to 2:30.

That collapsed quickly!!

Pedersen is definitely a good call for today….as the usual faces (MvdP, WvA, etc) but with the small team sizes and no team radios, look for a surprise winner.

Interesting break this with Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and Slovenia all missing it. Going to be hard to pull back with 4 man teams, no radios, and a few teams like GB protecting the break and disrupting the chase

Awfully nice of NBC to leave the bike race with an hour left as some more breaks were starting to form to show gymnastics…

Man, the race is hotting up…this is a dangerous move with VdP, Wout, Jorgensen and Alaplillipe.

Mads had awful timing for that mechanical…has some work to do.

I downloaded the NBC Sports app (in the US) which is streaming the race. Hopefully I don’t get cutoff since I don’t have peacock or any subscription

Remco is a machine

This is setting up well for Remco…and Wout. Pressure is on NED to bring them back.

Remco rode guys off his wheel on that climb with ease.

Yeah, Bob…that wasn’t a flat, that was a broken fork for the Norwegian rider! :scream:

Yeah, snapped right in half. Wonder how that happened

I wish there was some sort of map they could use to show where everyone on the front is to each other. Also the leader to chase group keeps jumping way around. Had 17 seconds for a bit then jumped to 33 seconds. Makes it a bit hard to tell exactly what is going on

Remco looking smooth and strong…think this is his race to win. And Wout just needs to mark wheels to get an arm chair ride back up to him.

Bob Roll: Remco Evenepoel is the biggest cycling superstar to come from Belgium in a long time
WVA: am I a joke to you?
