Always after 10 Minutes of cycling i get a sharp pain in right outer knee. When i run i have 0 Problems. I dont expect PT Answers, maybe just personal experience.
Hello D1tex and welcome!
Can you elaborate a little, it can be cleat position, cleat float, saddle position or saddle height. Does it come after hard efforts or just from moving your legs without force on the pedals?
hello
yes of course. so i started cycling about a year ago, i never had problems but suddenly a couple weeks ago, always after 10 Minutes of indoor cycling, i get a sharp pain on the right lateral knee. Doesnt matter how hard the effort, i always do a warmup to buildup to the effort. The Problem Occurs already in Power Z1.
This is very likely a fit situation or a technique situation I would l think. How is your knee alignment over the pedals? You want to make sure your kneecap is tracking exactly above your foot all the way around the pedal stroke. I see a lot of flared out knees out on the roads and I wonder how those guys are not in excruciating pain.
Grenhall above had some good things to consider as well.
Did anything change before this happened?
To help us can you tell us if it’s only while on the trainer ? Outside is fine?
Next:
Is your outside bike the same as you use inside on the trainer?
Same shoes?
If all this being the same then my first sugestion is to lower your seat a fraction inside.
If that’s not of any help (may take time for your knee to heal) then it’s probably a fit issue. It shows up because you are stationary and not moving around on the trainer like you would be while riding outside.
i installed aero bars on my indoor bike and really slightly adjusted the seat a couple mm up and forward, but when the problems started i reversed the seat and didnt use the aerobars and the problem continued
its not the same bike, i can tell you today if the problem is outside as well, i had to repair my outdoor bike and get it back today. But before i didnt have any problem on my indoor or outdoor bike, i did 2-3 hour Rides, intervals etc without pain indoors and 100k with 2000m ascent outside without pain. Same shoes yes.
That sounds super frustrating, especially since running gives you zero issues. Might be worth checking your cleat angle or saddle height just in case.
I’d say that solves it. 100% you haven’t put the same position back as before and that is what’s causing the issue. Sharp pain usually isn’t a “this is something I need to get accustomed to” it’s a straight up bad fit and your body is screaming at you that something needs to change. Problems with bike fit amplifies indoor because you’re stuck in a fixed position. Outside is more forgiving and can masquerade problems pretty far.
Check your outdoor bike if you get the same issues, if not set your indoor bike identical to the outdoor one in terms of seat setback, height and general position.
Check if your cleats have moved or are worn. Or try pedalling in trainers and see if the pain still happens. I’ve had knee pain like that, and it came when my cleats had twisted slightly.
