Offseason and 2026 Season Prep – Advice Needed

Hi all,

I’m looking for some input on how to structure my offseason and build-up towards the 2026 race season. to become even stronger next year.

Background:

  • I raced Masters licensed events from late April to the end of September this year.

  • I typically train around 8–10 hours per week.

  • I am a 42year male, My FTP is ~314W and I weigh approx. 85 kg.

  • I’ll be going on a training camp in Calpe Spain the first week of March 2026.

  • The 2026 season starts in late April again.

I’d like to make the most of the offseason without burning out, and arrive at the training camp in good shape to build intensity from there. I’m also curious how others balance rest, base building, and intensity during this period.

Questions:

  1. How would you structure the offseason from now (early October) until March/April?

  2. Should I take a full break now, or transition into a low-volume base?

  3. What kind of plan (TrainerRoad or otherwise) would you recommend, should it be leading into the training camp, the first licensed race or something completely different.

  4. Any tips for maintaining motivation and freshness during the long build-up?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hey there,

Welcome to the forum!

Good question..

Generally speaking, we typically recommend that each athlete take some time away from the bike to start off their offseason. It’s really hard for any of us to train year-round.

Once you’re really feeling called to get riding again, start with some easy rides that focus on fun.

When you feel ready to get back into training, I’d recommend simply building out a plan that includes your time in Calpe and your events starting in April. Since there will likely be plenty of time between the start of your plan and March/April, we’ll plan for enough Base training in your training plan.

Also, here are a few TR resources to check out if you’re interested!
