I’m also interested in seeing @NorCal_Cycling 's plan but the link in the youtube description isn’t working for me.
Yes I think it gets messed up with url shortening process.
Need to get Jeff to post it directly.
@NorCal_Cycling is there going to be Q&A and pettit ride tomorrow morning?
Another skipped week, Logan is doing his first race!
Thanks for letting me know @NorCal_Cycling.
Right, Texas isn’t requiring people to wear masks anymore either I think I heard so I guess bike racing is kosher too then ![]()
Is he doing the Holland Grand Prix?
watched most of it, and yeah only hitting 232 seems a bit off.
Jeff’s words are encouraging as my power curve looks similar so maybe there is Cat5 masters 55+ racing hope for me ![]()
Regarding the sprint commentary, I’ve never trained it and bought a power meter 10 months into cycling (Oct 2016) and was quickly seeing PRs of 850W 15-sec, 1100+ 5-sec, and 1200+ 1-sec. To me its like hearing Jonathan on the podcast rolling out of bed with a 300W FTP, while I bounce around between 220-260 and keep wondering if I’ll ever hit 280 again. While my sprint comes easy, the aerobic gains to be in the hunt at the end are difficult!
I agree.
I feel my ramp calculates a higher FTP than a 20 minute test, and likely higher than a real 1hr test. The ramp works for the TR workouts, but I think I would struggle on the road if I tried to actually carry it for a hour. On my list of things to test.
It reinforces my thoughts on trying to compare FTP numbers between riders, with coaches, and against charts, and this outside the short comings of the accuracy of different power meters and where it is recorded.
Interesting to see this series play out.
This dude’s off the couch fitness five weeks into training is 250w?
off the couch to 232W 20-min all-out. I’ve never done a race or group ride that looks like a ramp test ![]()
Newbie gains and coming back from a real month+ off-season are the best!
I agree.
I would trust my ramp test FTP for a <25 minute TT, but I would not trust it for a 1hr+ long race.
Also curious to know what race he did. I’m in the Dallas area as well and don’t know if any local RD’s putting on events.
Why? Isn’t this a marketing promotion with TR?
I think you’re right, also I’m sure the beta selection is random so potentially a brand new user could be testing just as a 5 year old vet.
Pretty sure they said the first set of beta testers wasn’t random. Maybe future beta invites will be, but typically they want a diverse group, not a random group of beta testers.
I thought the sign ups post podcast were randomly assigned, I stand corrected!
Different stages:
-
Before podcast 298 AT Intro: They hand picked a group of people for the initial beta testers that weren’t internal TR employees.
-
After podcast 298 AT Intro: They waited about a week and then started taking new beta testers via the email signups, at random AFAIK.
Seems perfectly reasonable to me, and from a process point of view a good idea. He’s a blank slate and apparently it works!
So of all the things that we could take from this, it’s that the Trainer Road sponsored rider got access to the AT Beta? Really?
Indeed. An over 20% increase in FTP would often lead to one heckuva slap in the face on the following workouts. The fact that this seems to show a decent “lead in” to the efforts from a relative noobie rider is something of a testament to AT in my eyes.
It will be interesting to see if the following workouts adapt to kick up if he shows good performance and RPE to “easier” workouts in the beginning.
