I am fortunate to be grandfathered in at 99 USD / yr - its still a lot of money for us in ZA with an ROE of 1:18 and i run both TR & ZWIFT if there are any increases i’m afraid 1 will have to go and it would probably be TR as i only use it when training for a specific event and with Zwift and can turn it on or off when needed.
Exactly. I’m not planning on leaving TR. For me personally it’s a great tool. And I have absolutely no issue whatsoever with legacy pricing or rewarding faithfull customers.
But because of the exchange rates, for me as a consumer in the EURO-zone the fact remains that I never know beforehand which amount I’ll pay each month.
First time we ever went to America I was 21 in 2006, I couldn’t believe how cheap everything was when we were getting 2 dollars to the pound almost, I bought a load of ipods and put them on ebay when I came back and made my money from the trip back
We sure have, but many don’t remember parity or better that happened last decade. We were doing quite well in the 0.75+ range for the last decade, which is quite an improvement over 0.6 we had for a long time (though I was getting paid in USD at the time, didn’t complain too much). There was a noticeable pricing adjustment about 15 years ago that made it a lot more reasonable, and often actually cheaper, to purchase many products in Canada than in US. It also killed off a large amount of cross-border shopping.
I went to New Zealand (from the US) that year and effective prices were all over the place. Most imports were quite expensive but local goods / services (importantly to me at the time, beer) were pretty cheap.
Not sure how much of this was due to relative currency and how much was due to being a relatively small economy in the middle of the pacific.
You are just incorrect. I will turn my heat down, eat less, repair my clothes, or whatever else. A cup of coffee is a necessity. People could get hurt otherwise
Not sure if you have tried many of the other platforms, but at least for bullet point 3, there are a several competitors that have workout creators, that are at least as good as TR.
I agree the price has really risen. I’m paying in Euro and when I first paid probably around January 2021 it was about €16 and it’s been over €20 for a while now.
I’ve just recently ended my GCN race pass subscription and I won’t be renewing my Strava subscription either. It’s annoying to see the price continually rising but still feel with winter looming I’ll be getting value from TR so will sacrifice other things first.
For the last 6 months or so, I’ve done 100% of my training outdoors and live in an area where it’s easy to ride outside year-round. I’m on a mid-tier legacy plan and have maintained my TR sub this entire time in anticipation of ATv2 that will analyze my outdoor rides but every month that ticks off without its release makes it tougher to justify. However, I just know if I cancel my sub, the next week they’ll release ATv2 and I’ll be forced to resub at current rates or go a different direction. Every time I think about this, I think about the $8 coffee I have on Sunday rides or the almost $300 I just spent on nutrition products, or any number of other cycling-related expenses and realize that in the grand scheme of things, it’s not that much $$ relative to the other things I spend my money on.
I realize not everyone is in this situation and really sympathize with those international users that are facing financial and energy crises. I did, however, want to vent a little because as much as I like TR and the culture they’ve created, this “dangling carrot” is the one issue that has soured me a bit on the brand. That said, as the founder of a startup myself, I understand the challenge of running a fledgling company, setting expectations, and keeping your customers happy, so I hope the above comment is taken as a bit of constructive feedback rather than bitching and moaning.
Yeah, that is my takeaway as well…along with the fact that some of us are extremely fortunate not to have to be making those choices.
Wow, yours was $200? Mine renewed at the beginning of the month. $255 Canadian (1.35 exchange incl. 2.5% credit card conversion fee). I can seem to stomach it a little more when I look at it as $4.90 per week, but still. ![]()
Same here. I’ll be ditching TR when my sub runs out. I don’t use it enough and the lack of specific features to my needs make it an expense that I can’t justify.
I can make do with TrainerDay for the winter.
No, I just chose to not go and find how much it actually was with taxes and everything else. I am sure it will be closer to $300 when it renews January 2023.
Loyalty subscriptions seem quite common in the U.S. I’ve been a member of Golds Gym for 18 years. The price has gone up $5 since 2004. New members pay triple. I have friends that have gym memberships that are locked at $20 for life.
Yup, my wife and others I know have had this type of gym access for years. Many of which have actually spanned across multiple owners and business identities, which is even more surprising in a way.
I listened to the TR podcast for a year and learned so much that I almost felt like I owed them money. And with Peloton at $US50 a month and the average gym membership at $US150 a month I’m ok with $189 for the year. Don’t ask me how I’ll feel in a year or two from now but in the first five months of using TR I feel like I’ve gotten my monies worth. Hell the customer support alone is worth it. Where else are you going to get the CEO of a company pulling you into line. lol
Xert (didn’t realise it was excerpt instead of Zert) looks interesting, but little detail about season planning etc.
RGT, BKool, Rouvy etc look nice (particularly one off lifetime payment) but again no planning etc.
It’s surprising TrainerDay can fly so close to existing properties without falling foul of copyright law.
TrainerRoad comes out on top, for a lot of the reasons I can’t see moving away any time soon. Let alone the value from the Podcast and constant innovation.
(I came across this video looking for Pillar, which still looks like a weird no-substance thing - interestingly they’ve created their own PSS, like FasCat are creating OSS. TR make your own training TP and then use your AI yo estimate “hour power - FTP”)
Pronounced ‘Exert’, like the physical effort. There is no ‘p’ in there ![]()
That does of course make more sense. I was going for the most obvious pronunciation and missed the sitter.
Too much reading lately ![]()
