No FTP gain predicted

I’m just starting a new detection phase, which includes 2 weeks of build and 2 weeks of specialty. The plan is “FTP builder”… and all workouts have been left unedited. I’m being predicted 0w gain in 4 weeks… which seems low? Is the AI looking at my previous period and thinking I’ve plateaued for now?

Happy for my plan and workouts to be discussed here.

Those Threshold Mixed Intervals are fun, but I suspect if you changed them to over/unders you’d maybe move the needle on your FTP more. Maybe change them and see? You can always change them back.

Maybe try a similar experiment with the VO2s as well, just out of curiosity.

Do you mean change the VO2 to over unders as well?

I’ve just had this issue with no predicted change which will start on Monday. I’m sure it has to be a bug as at the start of the month I rode for an hour at a power exceeding my currently predicted FTP.

I was thinking perhaps just changing them to a different type of VO2s to see what effect that has.

You started Jan around 300TSS per week and fluctuated hours and TSS from planned hours and TSS quite a lot every week from what I can see on my phone.

Your FTP has fluctuated as well.

Then two weeks ago iirc you seem to have settled into around 6hrs just over 400 tss and seen a 10W ftp gain. So I suspect it’s thinking that this jump up needs time to settle in for consistency - or it’s expecting you to fluctuate as before and not see gains, maybe.

Did you take the recommended volume?

Probably undermining the fitness gains of your training by doing so - was it a time trial or race?

One hour at ftp or thereabouts is not going to undermine your gains.

Apart from a couple of missed days I’ve done back to back FTP plans since October, no edits, no additions, one solitary outdoor ride.

Maybe the link to your calendar wasn’t working - sounds like my year I’ve described. Apart from the FTP gain

I will check… maybe I had some dodgy weeks that I’ve forgotten about

Same for me, Saturday I started a new 4 week block and there is .4% increase of 1 watt !!! It’s the start of specialty phase could that be why? I opened up a support ticket to ask.

It was a race, after which my AI FTP predictions actually increased. Have adhered to the full block of training. FTP hasn’t changed in months even though I’m seeing tangible performance increases in my power charts.

We should all expect our race efforts to be greater than our ftp. I’ll assume it was also a PR effort for the last six weeks, which is a good indicator that AI will respond.

Can we know what your compliance and ftp history has been this year, and what your race day effort was?

Right now, it’s showing a 0.4% (1 watt) increase. Did you post this before or after your ride yesterday?

Also, I’ll just say again that the number of PRs you’ve set since the beginning of the year is pretty wild, so it does look like your fitness is consistently improving regardless of your FTP. :+1:

After I’d started the thread I played around with the “approach sliders”… I went from balanced to aggressive (just as an experiment). That gave the 1w increase you see now. I may revert the approach to balanced.

That makes sense when looking at your training history. A lot of these points back to the discussion we had back in mid-May.

I think there is a lot of info there that’s useful in this thread. Can I share some of that here?

Hi, yes please discuss here. Also I never did find out why my FTP flat-lined from November to May - 6 months FTP building … with no FTP change! (And please nobody say FTP is irrelevant - it is all over TR and the TR adverts!).

Rather than look at last year’s progress, I’m focusing on the present, and you’ve come a pretty long way since the start of TR AI in January.

You started with an FTP of 246, then bumped up to 252, 253, 251, and finally 261 just this past weekend. That’s your highest FTP that I can see in TR for a few years.

Additionally, you’ve had 13 workouts since January where you’ve set all-time PRs, and your RPE surveys show that the work you’re doing isn’t overly challenging. How have your hard workouts been feeling recently?

You’re currently at a pretty high w/kg, and it’s going to be harder to continue making gains as often as you have, but it looks like you’re on the right track.

It looks like we’d recommend increasing your volume for the remainder of your plan, which could be one way toward more gains, but it’s really important to stay in touch with how you feel along the way. There comes a point where more stress won’t actually make you faster, so keep that in mind if you push forward.

I’d be curious to see what your prediction looks like with that suggested volume bump. Have you mentioned something about that recently? :face_with_monocle:

I have never used TR before October, apart from a free trial which I think i set up but ignored (all previous workouts were just from zwift and the occasional outdoor ride). So FTP figures were best guess or Zwift generated (so possibly not reliable).

In 8 months of TR (all spent on back to back FTP plans) I saw a 1 month gain, 6 months flat line, 1 month gain.

I know you say focus on this year, but I have been raising the FTP flatline issues for several months - either the FTP plan doesn’t work (workouts not hard enough?); FTP is being detected/measured incorrectly; I was not training “correctly” during the flatline periods; or I have flatlined and TR could not give me any harder workouts.

I did a check volume a couple of weeks ago, and increased volume accordingly. Workouts feel good, even with the recent bump in FTP.
