Exactly what I just did. Went to my bike shop to inquire about upgrading from my Snap to the 6. Left with the V because of the discount on the older model.
So itās been a bit of an inconspicuous start for me with the V6. I remember seeing all the talk about how many issues people were having with the KICKR 18 and always found it interesting because as Iāve often said, I had my OG KICKR for a decade and never had a single issue with it.
⦠fast forward to unboxing of the V6, it was louder than even my V1 KICKR and didnāt feel right either. I had to immediately create a support ticket and apparently it has a bad bearing. Had to be RMAād on day 1 and Iām still waiting for the replacement. The box was pretty banged up when I got it so potentially it was damaged in shipping
Thatās a lame start for a new toy. Hopefully Wahoo gets a proper model to you and you have no further issues.
Sad Always sad when buzzkill shows up on new toy day, I had one with my Kickr 2017. Your day will come soon!
question
why do you need wifi on a trainer? usually i will use ANT+ or bluetooth to pair with zwift or TR.
Please advise.
Sounds like you need a wired connection for that.
That works too, but as Shane showed that the new Wi-Fi option also sidesteps the Popcorn Problem.
Holy crapā¦this is an actual thing!!
Just clicked through to the review and found that bit. Iām guessing this is very much a YMMV thing, though - the microwave in our house is very effective at knackering the WiFi, even when the devices are nowhere near it.
Microwave or not, plenty of people have connection issues with BLE & ANT+. The Direct Connect and new Wi-Fi are hopefully more solid and reliable methods for those users. I just ordered a V6 with the DC so I can have all the options since I hit dropouts just often enough to cause problems in Zwift events specifically.
And they are still plenty annoying in TR workouts with ERG mode since the dropouts lead to resistance drops and stutter in the basic workout progress. I plan to test both of the new connection methods and hopefully wave āgoodbyeā to my dropouts.
So how many trainers will you have in the house? Do you sell off the old ones?
I do have the CycleOps H2 headed to a new home of a local friend.
For fun, here is the list of trainers Iāve got. Smart trainers first, standard second.
- Wahoo Kickr 2022 (V6), soon to be mounted on InsideRide E-Flex Plus Motion System
- Wahoo Kickr 2017 (V3)
- Tacx Neo 2
- CycleOps Magnus
- CycleOps Powerbeam Pro ANT+
- Minoura FG-542, for fitting sessions
- Kinetic Road Machine (latest green model)
- Nashbar Aluminum Rollers (DIY motion base, remote magnetic resistance, side wheels)
- Kinetic Road Machine (older gray model, loaned to Perry)
what cassette (11 speed) does the trainer come with? 11-28 or 11-30 ?
11-28 per the info on the specs page.
Got my replacement V6 end of last week. No issues this time. Nothing has blown my mind, road feel seems very similar and I donāt think I would have known it has a modestly bigger flywheel than my gen1 if I didnāt read the specs.
Primary motivation to upgrade for me was:
- questionable power accuracy on my gen 1 and I use an older dedicated bike on my trainer that doesnāt have a PM
- my gen 1 had frequent (usually about once per ride) data dropouts
- when dropouts occurred in Erg the trainer would spike resistance which threw off my intervals
- gen 1 was pretty damn loud
V6 addresses all of those complaints for me so am happy enough with it, Less compelling of an upgrade for people coming from more recent models.
Yeah - as a Rouvy user, Iām plenty familiar with that. They seem to have a real problem with flooding the WiFi traffic to the point where the sensor connections just crap out.
You donāt have a Faraday cage cozy for your microwave? A second layer anyway?
why did you need to replace?
