New England off road races

Hey all,

I’m moving to Vermont this winter and looking for recommendations for Gravel and longer-distance mountain bike races. I’ve read about Rasputista, but can’t tell if it’s still running.

Welcome to New England! Rasputitsa no longer running, but VT 50 is awesome. Best to look at Bikereg for all events. Loads of mtb and gravel in our region. Fantastic riding

What part of Vermont?

The Slate Valley Epic in Vermont lives up to it’s name.

Just outside of St Albans. It’s about a 20 minute drive to Burlington I believe

On the gravel side of things, the future of Rasputitsa isn’t looking great due to some very unfortunate health issues on the part of the organizers. They put in some amazing work for a bunch of years, and it was a really wonderful race.

Some other good events (roughly in order throughout the year):

  • Muddy Onion (April) - Definitely lived up to the name this year. Not a race, but it’s a very chill, phenomenally well run event with a pretty big turnout. Big route’s typically in the 58ish mile/7kish feet of climbing range in a big loop around Central Vermont, starting in downtown Montpelier with lots of food and drink to be had before and after.
  • Tunbridge Ranger (June) - Really fun event, a fun ride with some timed enduro segments. Great rolling terrain. Big route’s 62 miles, 7200ish feet of climbing.
  • Vermont Overland (August) - Great race, occasionally attracts some big names (won by Ian Boswell/Lachlan Morton this year). 55 miles, 7k feet of climbing with a ton of very chunky Class IV roads. Very professionally run, solid event.

There’s also Stowe Gravel Worlds (intense group ride) on Saturday mornings, and I’m sure there are rides out of Ski Rack in Burlington. But you’re definitely moving to a great place for gravel and MTB. Catamount in Williston does weekly MTB races, and for a bit more of a hike from where you are, Kingdom Trails has plenty of great terrain.

I strongly recommend Jericho Dirt, weekly Thursday evening gravel group rides leaving from Jericho center (and occasionally from Richmond). Check out their instagram account for details. Also, in the greater Burlington area, it’s hard to beat the mountain biking within a 40 minute drive: Cochran’s, Chamberlain, Saxon Hill, Perry Hill, Hinesburg Town forest… the list goes on and on! I lived in Burlington for 2 years and never once went to Kingdom Trails. I just had too much to ride right in my own backyard to make the trip worthwhile.
