I am looking at a new bike and got some help for a local bike fitter but I would like to get a sanity check after spending lots of time on Bike Geometry Calculator.
It seems for now that the hoods would move 32mm back (shorter) but also 25mm down.
Is that reasonable to move the hoods position back when moving down? It seems logical to me but I am unsure of the proportions here. Of course the position will be a bit more aggressive but is it reasonable?
Your body is adapted to the position on your old bike. I would set up the new bike to be as close to the old one as possible. After a few rides then start making adjustments.
Or try the new positions. 32mm is only an inch and a quarter and 25mm is almost an inch. It’s not ‘huge’, and may be what you actually need. Give it a fair chance, you paid for it. If after a dozen rides of average length the fit seems way off, then go back to the fitter and take it up with them. Like ‘Why did you think I needed an inch and a quarter back, and an inch lower? What told you that?’ See what they say, but I’d give it a chance, they might be right…
We need more info….why is the fitter recommending this change? Was there something uncomfortable about your previous position?
I’m assuming he also put you on some type of a fit bike with the new dimensions / position….how did that position feel? How long did you ride in the new position? Did it feel the same at the end of the ride vs. the beginning?
It is logical to move back, but generally in small increments to compensate as you move down since moving down does extend reach but all these relationships occur in tiny increments relative to each other. But a 35mm change in reach is enormous (3 1/2 stem lengths) regardless of moving down 25mm which is also not an insignificant amount. Assuming your old fit was correct what is the reason for such large changes?
I’m just wondering what the motivation for the position change is, not to mention stack and reach figures from the old bike to the new bike (please let us know what bike you have and what you’re looking to replace it with). Is the new position just because of the new bike or something you’ve been looking to do? Does the new bike have a really short and low front end so that stem length will be the same from old to new with few to no spacers? Are you looking for a more aggressive position? If indeed the frames are similar such a change would not only affect position but handling as well which would generally be more to the nimble/twitchy side depending on your point of view and comfort level with fast(er) handling bikes. Let’s not forget comfortable is fast so make sure whatever change you make you’ll be comfortable and confident.
Not near enough information for anyone on the internet to be in a better position to give you advice over your fitter.
We don’t know anything. How did you arrive at your old position, how was it working for you, what were your objectives for the fit, any issues or injuries that you have. What else changed in your fit, was it only the bar position…? I could go on and on.
But basically, I would inherently trust someone in person who knows the answers to all these questions over a rando on the internet like me.
