Need to complete Ride to Update PLs?

Not sure if this is new I feel it used to be different but you have to complete the ride to update PLs? Feels like this doesn’t accurately reflect PLs. Two examples from last week were where I had a VO2max and SS workout where there was a roughly 1 hr Z2 at the end of the workout. For the VO2max workout I was at PL 1 for Vo2Max and the WO was 6.3, after the WO it showed i hit the 6.3 but since I didnt do the Z2 the PLs didnt change, this was similar for the SS workout. This doesnt make sense to me. I asked TR and their response was “If a workout isn’t completed in full, TrainerRoad’s system won’t count it toward your Progression Levels, even if you completed the hardest part (like the VO2max or Sweet Spot intervals). This is because the system evaluates the entire workout structure, including the endurance or cooldown sections, to ensure that the intended training stimulus and fatigue were achieved.”

Am I missing something here?

Thanks! It not even that it stings, I just think it doesnt reflect the progression levels accurately. If I loaded a similar workout that didnt have the Z2 tail my VO2 levels would be much higher and therefor the training plan appropriately adjusted, now it will still prescribe workouts based on a 1.0 vs 6.3 PL.

I think this is something they are actively working on :+1:

This is actually already addressed - adaptive training no longer blindly follows PL levels to prescribe workouts - it now assessess your actual ability .

So you wont be prescribed a workout based on a PL of 1.0 - you should be prescribed a correct workout.

This isn’t normally an issue, since we don’t have workouts that have lots of time spent after the hard work’s been done.

Many of our athletes who want to keep riding after their workout will either load up another workout or gradually extend the cooldown until their heart is content.

In your case, you’re talking about custom workouts where the extra volume is a mandatory part of the workout, which can’t be cut short. The downside of doing it this way is that you can’t just do the first part of the workout and get PL credit.

One last thing to keep in mind is that custom workouts don’t often have accurate PLs, so it’s not always worth fighting to get them, especially if you aren’t following a TrainerRoad plan.

I might be missing something here, but as an athlete that has been given Rysy multiple times, which is VO2max followed by 40 minutes of Z2, I’m tempted to disagree. I have also done workouts like David, which has 30 minutes of easy pedaling to finish it off, but there that part might be counted as the cooldown, which you don’t have to do to get PL credit?

Ahh, you got me there.

There are some workouts like that, but not many in our library.

In those situations, if you don’t have the time to complete the entire workout, I’d recommend using Workout Alternates to find one with the duration that works for you beforehand.

Yup custom from a custom training plan, sounds like from kevistraining youre working on it. Hope so I recall this use to not be an issue . I dont understand why its not already fixed. Today was another example 1:15 workout, I only had time for 1 hr, I did all 9 sprints and my PL should have gone from 3.1 to 6.3 but it stayed at 3.1 It makes the PL useless to me. LOVE TR hope you fix this soon as Id rather not have to hunt around for TR similar workouts

I didn’t realise it was a custom workout :see_no_evil_monkey:

In those cases, for the time being, I’d use Workout Alternates to select a 60-minute workout if that’s all you have time for.

ok thanks guys, and to be clear the PLs dont factor into the FTP detection? Thats what most matters to me

Just wanted to thank you for posting this. I was thinking about quitting a workout early today out of boredom, but finished out the time because I wanted to ensure the effort “counted” after seeing your post.

Just to clarify, workouts that are cut short are still used by Adaptive Training, AI FTP Detection, and everything else. You just won’t get the Progression Level bump, which will make a difference in upcoming workout recommendations.

As of now, cutting short a workout does not equal a “pass” and, therefore, we won’t assume that you’re ready for the next step.

Don’t sweat it, though! It happens from time to time, but I always recommend using Workout Alternates if you’re sure you won’t have time for the scheduled workout. :+1:
