Max HR... Can it be too high?

Is there a point at which max HR is too high? I won a zwift race a few weeks ago and my HR peaked at 191. I’ve been training more recently and my HR peaked at 197 on another race. I’m 48, 172cm and 66kg (if that matters!).

There are quite a few other threads you can search for.

Summary: not, it’s not a concern. It’s quite common to have people above 200, and it is not related to performance.

When I was 48 (2 years ago) I peaked at 197bpm too and my mate of the same age would peak at over 200bpm so dont fret it.

I was 48 or 49, training for my first marathon, and hit a max heart rate of 202 while doing hill repeats.

Oh those were the days. At 40 it was normal while racing. Now in my 70’s I can only dream of 190’s. Did hit 170 this year at a gravel event. Probably trying to keep up with some young kid. Hard to shut off that “chase the rabbit down” mentality.

At 55 mine was 190 bpm. Never concerned myself with it and still don’t. It is what it is. If you and your heart are healthy, it’s self limiting. It’s only when there’s an issue that kicks of an arrhythmia that there is a concern.
