Marijuana Users (THC)

Sure, you might open some minds. Perhaps you’d share a reason others haven’t considered.

As long as you do it with some amount of tact and aren’t spamming the thread like crazy, why not? Others are free to ignore your post if they’d like, it takes no effort at all. However, our egos (mine included) usually get the best of us.

BTW, I should mention that I sincerely appreciate your long-time, very helpful contributions to this forum and appreciate your points of view.

By no means is direct personal experience a requirement here or anywhere else on the forum.

I have strong opinions on Elite brand trainers, even though I’ve never owned or used a single one. I formed my opinion on reviews, 2nd and 3rd hand experience shared from friends and forum members. I share that view with those that are looking for trainers that ask which ones I like or dislike.

What I don’t do is pass any judgement, direct or implied, to anyone who does choose an Elite trainer. I state my view and only that, with no comment about those that choose otherwise or their motivations in doing so. That hinted and more direct aspect of the posts above was my only issue.

You say that as if it is a bad thing.

But I have to agree, the heart surgeon analogy is poor, at best.

Really what I was after was to see people’s actual experiences and results who have used MJ, or use it now. I’ve smoked pretty much every day for the last 13 years and it hasn’t gotten in the way of my life at all, I’m super happy with where I am both professionally, emotionally, relationship wise, etc but specially want to know more about other riders, I’m pleasantly surprised how many of us indulge

Let’s not turn this into the equivalent of “should I get a carbon bike with Di2 or an aluminum bike with eTap” and have someone chime in with “steel is real, single speed for life”, it’s just not needed

Ah, so true, I stand corrected!

Can’t remember if I mentioned (yeah, I know… short term memory loss ) but I’m in MA, a legal medical & adult use state. New dispensary opened up near me last week & they’ve got a 1:4 THC:CBD strain (co2 extracted vape oil cartridge, actually) that I think I’m going to try.

Just curious if any of the folks in this thread use cannabis products with higher CBD:THC ratios & how that experience compared with the currently more popular strains with THC levels in the stratosphere & negligible CBD amounts?

Personally, I prefer the strains I’ve used that are at least equal or CBD dominant. I find most “regular” strains far too strong for my taste & have to be very careful of the amount I intake lest I get panicky for the first 20 minutes or so.

I’ve changed my relationship with cannabis after mastering infusion methods like creating oil infusions and tinctures. I smoke on occasion still, but over all prefer ingestion delivery methods. It takes some time to get the dosing correct, too much is terrible, not enough is, well not enough. Once you figure that out though you will have an a ha moment, “this is how we should be doing this”. You have to get past the instant gratification and all the tactile parts of smoking, but once you can nail the timing it’s hard to go back.

I don’t think it holds me back - to answer you more directly. Like literally everything we consume, there are drawbacks, but for me - I’m a lifetime user. I used to drink regularly and deal with a hangover almost every time I drank (big or small amounts), cannabis has made me feel poorly maybe 10 times total over the years. The worst is over indulging edibles, beyond the panicky feeling, there is usually a hangover of sorts associated with that. 99.9% of the time it makes me feel better. I use it to wind down, rarely use it while riding, and it definitely helps me sleep through the night.

I ride with 2 guys that light up before every ride. It doesn’t seem to bother them that they drop me on the climbs or that I have trouble keeping up on the gnarly technical DH sections

Well, I’m not in the ‘THC’ party, but I’m taking CBD-products on a daily basis. My personal favorite one is CBD gummies ( don’t know if there’s something better, but I’m taking is what you can click over there. Why I am using it and how it helped me? First of all those tastes incredibly well. Secondly, I like how it each time works for me differently - cause only the individual biochemistry dictates how CBD works will work

Fairly light THC user here, though I prefer edibles.
I do most of my training indoors, so I find it makes a longish steady-state ride way more enjoyable. I’d be kind of nervous to use it outside though?
It’s also helpful in that i struggle with adequate sleep and nutrition after workouts.

I’m also a light THC user, but figured I’d share my first edibles on the bike experience yesterday and see if anyone will tell me what I might be doing wrong, haha.

First issue is that I’m really tired this week, work has been stressful, and my motivation to train is low (I train at night). I also should mention that I’m not a edibles person, I grow my own since I’m in a growing-legal but no sales state. So, I usually vape (and by usually, I mean like 1-2x a month). But I decided to make a nice batch of cannabutter with some leftover stuff (a couple of strains combined). Came out well, but I hadn’t tested the potency. So yesterday, after I got home and made dinner, I took about a quarter teaspoon about an hour before getting on the bike.

Cleaned the kitchen, put my daughter to bed, felt fine if a little relaxed. All good. But, about an hour later, it hit  The only way I can describe it is that even though I was in the same room as my bike, it was across a canyon. It felt like an impossible task to get my shorts on and get on. I lterally sat on the bed and stared at my bike for over an hour. Oops. Eventually I hopped on and did a much shorter version of my workout, I didn’t feel bad, but it wasn’t what I would call pleasant either. Just kind of out of it.

However, I went right to sleep afterwards, which is always a huge battle for me. I’m actually much more rested feeling today. I’m not ready to write it off yet, since the post-workout relaxation seemed heightened, but I need to make sure that I don’t get knocked out next time and/or not lose motivation. Maybe I’ll just half the dose (only before a Z2-3 ride indoors, I should add).

Edibles are a different animal. A high dosage can produce something almost like a psychedelic trip, while a low dosage can be fairly mild. It’s important to figure out your dosage. Try again with a much smaller amount and see what that does for you.

I had this happen to me recently and it affected my ride the next day even. You just have to be really diligent about the dosing. If you took 1/2 tsp, take a 1/4 next time. I’ve learned to err on the side of caution because too little is always better than too much. I recommend tinctures over oil infusions as they are slightly easier to dose and seem to come on quite a bit quicker. It’s easier than trying to measure out butter etc. Another recommendation is using olive oil for the same dosing reasons, the time to effect is the same as any other edible though.

Stick with it. I vaped for years, using a tincture is better when you can figure out the dosing. You’ll get it down to more of a science, “If I take X amount at this time, by this time X later I will feel this way” and it’s pretty great when you nail it. Your lungs will thank you.

Yeah, not going to try again today, will see how the body responds. Everyone said edibles were different, but they weren’t kidding!

They are very different for sure. Not gonna go full Joe Rogan, but when it is ingested vs inhaled the THC is metabolized differently and is converted to a more psychoactive substance that causes a stronger reaction. If you eat enough it can definitely feel like a mild mushroom trip.

Burning is an integral part of cycling for me, especially mountain biking. Marijuana can increase focus and relieve pain immediately. Combined with an uplifted euphoric sensation and increasing heart rate, you could feel super human to a point. I was getting a lot of economy from a cartridge w thc vape oil. Never compared it with flower, but it sure felt economical.

Great point on edibles and how the THC (or even CBD) is metabolized. When THC taken as an edible i’ve read that it gets processed through the liver. Being that the liver is an important part of energy delivery systems (Glycogen delivery i think?) then edibles would be taxing that system.
I’m not a big fan of using edibles for this reason and have felt my energy levels a bit muted (but def. felt super high) I like them (edibles) on big epic’s but i microdose (pipe, one hit) before almost every ride (not race any more…used to but no more).
In addition smoking in small amounts is not as taxing on your lungs as you would think on a small amount (the damage to lungs from smoking is based on cigarette studies which people are smoking 3x++ the amount than the typical MJ user…think about smoking 4-10 MJ joints a day, would suck for me) MJ smokers use much less for a result.
Add to this the inconsistent manufacturing and dosing measures that is still not regulated well and the fact that the THC stays in your system longer when ingested and i’m not really into it…stick to smoking until i hear differently (would love one of the TR coaches input on this…actually asked this in an early TR podcast that got answered! (thrill) but they basically said it was too early to tell)).
So this may be stoner philosophy and feel free to argue anything this stoner has said!
