Fructose is very sweet. It’s what makes table sugar sweet.
Hey guys, i’m dipping a toe in here. Anyone in Australia suggest a place to buy these ingrediants in country? Online is fine, but i’d prefer australian supplier with COVID supply chains etc.
I’ve used the first 2 links in the past - no issues with them at all. The lotus fructose i buy from a local health food store, to negate the postage cost.
Depending on where you live, you may have a home-brew store near you, i’m going to give them a try as I have one local to me - https://www.australianhomebrewing.com.au/corn-syrup-dry-maltodextrin-2kg
I haven’t been able to find maltodextrin at any home brew shops but there’s a health food shop that orders it in for me, it’s the carbo-gain one that I’ve seen earlier in the thread. There’s also these guys, I nearly bought from them, but as I was going to the shopping centre I just dropped in to the local health food shop.
What are people using for electrolytes? The nutrition label below is from a custom mix that I have been using from Infinit Nutrition for about $2/bottle. It has worked very well for me and I’d like to see if I can make it on my own but for less. However, I’m struggling to find an electrolyte mix that doesn’t blow the budget. Precision Hydration 500 sachets are nearly identical with just a little more sodium, but at more than $1/sachet they “blow the budget.”
Infinit Nutrition Custom Mix
PH500
Edit: A US version of this would be great!
Thanks guys! I’ve been using nothing but straight SIS electrolite for workout fueling (and yes i know that is probably not the right stuff alone). I really like the flavours and that helps stomach it workout after workout. Can anyone see why i wouldn’t use that as the electrolyte component and add the maltodextrin?
Thanks
Jamie
can’t see why not. sounds good. just be aware it will change the drink from being isotonic to hypertonic. so watch out for dehydration. but if your workouts are shortish or in a cold/moderate climate should be fine in my experience.
Been reading through all the comments on this thread and found them really useful. I finally took the plunge, bought my own ingredients and mixed my own.
2:1 ratio of maltodextrin:fructose (both from Bulk Powders). Mixed 1kg of maltodextrin and 500g of fructose in a big pan ready for future rides. Added 120g per 750ml bottle, a small scoop of Bulk Powders electrolyte mix and 7-8 drops of Bulk Powders Luiquiflav for flavour. I added the malto/fructo mix to an empty bottle and added enough warm tap water to dissolve the mix. I then added a couple of ice cubes and topped up with cold water. Works out at about 12p (UK) per 20g (72p per 750ml bottle or 48p per 500ml). Bargain.
Just completed a 48 mile ride with 3,500 ft of climbing and my legs felt great. Got back and they felt really fresh.
I think I’ve discovered my new regular energy drink. Thanks to everyone on here who contributed.
What are US people using for maltodextrin, fructose, and electrolytes. I’m trying to replicate this formula above (70-75g carbs, electrolytes similar to Precision Hydration 500) but the best I can get is $2.10/bottle buying the ingredients individually. It costs me $2.40 to buy it directly. I would love to use BulkPowders.com but they don’t ship to the US. Please post links. Thanks!!

Plus a caffeinated NUUN tab does it for me.
Thanks!!
OR you can use trioral salts. They come in a box of 100 and mix them into your bottles or big batches.
Hi,
I bought this recently.
One thing I found was to get a scoop/measuring spoon and weigh up how much each one was and then use that to measure the mix. Saves time trying to weight it out each time for a bottle.
Also don’t stress about using hot water to dissolve it, even table sugar dissolves by the time I mix it to need it when on the bike.
Do you guys use this on any of your shorter (1-1.5 hour) TR workouts or just longer rides?
Depends. If it is a recovery ride then I just drink water. If it is sweet spot or above then I fuel on the bike with mix.
Same here. As the TR folks say, “don’t diet on the bike”
Agree with the others below – I fuel based primarily on intensity, not duration.
Here’s the supermix recipe I came up with:
1 scoop Gatorade powder, 66g carbs, $0.40
1/2 cup Maltodextrin, 60g carbs, $0.80
~120g carbs total
Mix well
Split evenly into bottles if desired & top with water. Makes 2x60g bottles or 3x40g bottles
Cost: $1.20 per supermix bottle, $0.60 per 60g bottle, or $0.40 per 40g bottle
I take on sugars for high tempo/SST and up.
For endurance rides, if the ride is long enough, it should be fuelled. No need to use processed sugars though. I like peanut butter/nutella sandwiches and bananas.
Also I seem to remember that fructose is worse for you than other sugars (citation needed), so I stick to just maltodextrin until I reach 60g. Also maltodextrin is cheaper.
can you link the items you got from bulkpowders…being in the uk id like to give this ago.
