Low Cadence, Choking, Equipment Choices and More – Ask a Cycling Coach 285

The cadence discussion caught my ears too. I have a good friend who I ride with often. We are very comparable riders in most regards, which has helped me notice where we are different and in particular, the types of hills that suit each of us. I come out on top if the climb is one where I can spin with a cadence 80+, be it a short-and-steep punch or a long but not-so-steep steady-state effort. My friend on the other hand excels on the long and steeps where we’ve run out of gears and cadence drops below 70 or so.

Now, as much as my mate and I get along, I don’t take it too well when I can’t drop him on a hill. And if he drops me… that’s just inexcusable. TR has really helped me up my cadence and power. Now I have to figure out how to up my power with a low cadence. Any suggestions are welcome!
