Why not just look at what type of workout the new plans call for and then use train now to pick the appropriate level workout for that zone and duration? It may not work perfectly if the target zone isn’t offered on train now, but you could at least refresh Train Now until the correct type of V02, Threshold, or endurance ride pops up. Kind of a back door AT.
Yes, the new sustained power build is not very sustained power - here I totally agree. And I am huge fan of sustained power workouts.
But… when you look at the composition of the workouts it is a proper build (from a classical point of view). Vo2 max should elicit central adaptations and improve the ceiling, and along that probably FTP. Stock FTP build plans from very reputable coach are basically 2 vo2 max weekly and a threshold workout. The structure here is quite similar. The real muscle endurance part should be taken care off during late base.
The problem I see is the categorization of builds under different names that suggest specificity, but in the end you want to build your FTP during build.
My guess is a couple of things:
-
its an entry level vo2 session (3.5) so the long rests are to get people to get through it when not really used to vo2 work (rather than drop the power and not really complete much time in the right zone)
-
probably more likely is TR know exactly how many people actually complete vo2 sessions with shorter rest periods, and realise that not many actually do…so long rests means higher completion rates
But they really are loooooong rests so it seems a little bizarre to me…
yeah, it would be nice to see some plans that support sweet spot progression and threshold progressions. I would expect more emphasis on longer threshold intervals. It looks like a nice plan, just not so much sustained power.
Now that my TR plans underwent a once-off adjustment based on AI/ML, I’m always checking out the next ride and wondering what kind of pain is ahead. Warlow +1 is coming up with not a very encouraging passing rate looking at recent attempts. How much worse is it than Warlow 0 for those who tried both?
Warlow+1 looks tough. Almost VO2 in nature?
Warlow looks like a pretty standard threshold over-under workout.
I haven’t done either sorry, but I was interested enough to look and will be interested to see how you go. good luck!
It appears the biggest difference is the “under” is at 95% FTP on the regular, and 98% FTP on the +1 version. So the plus one is more “at-over” with both having a VO2 level 110% “over” that is just one minute long. They have the same duration and power everywhere else that I see.
They are rated very close in the new Workout Levels (0.3 difference) so not massive, but could be a pass/fail depending on your actual Progression Level and history with over-under
Yea, I saw the difference, but I have learned by now that my perception of how comparable workouts differ can be vastly different depending on whether I have done them or not. If not, I have in the past vastly underestimated the effect of small differences.
I completed Warlow last weekend, it was definitely tough. I did have problems out side my control that influenced that workout. Like, I lost power in my house luckily during a rest interval, it then switched back on thankfully. Then minutes later in the middle of an interval a shelf just gave out in my garage. ![]()
It was tough I gave myself a 4/5, I tried to stay in tune with on screen instructions having me stand for each “over” and those are what always get me.
