Kickr Bike V1, long term reviews?

Nope, just ride like you did on the Core  The gearing on the KICKR BIKE doesn’t matter like it does on the regular Direct Drive trainers.

Thanks, I guess the question was based on the fact that on the Core I had the bike on my small chainring and mid-cassette. Of course the Bike is digital, and I wondered if there was a setting to make sure it understood it was in Erg. After several rides I’ve seen it makes no difference. It turns on 1-3, I’ve shifted to 1-5 for TR workouts with no perceptible difference once TR adjusts to the shift.

Thanks for the help!

I think I read this here but cannot find it. If I unlock the incline with TR controlling the Bike in erg, do I get incline commands proportionate to the increases in power?

No, there is no incline support on TR

There is support for the regular Climb (the separate unit), but not the Bike apparently.

With TR I just manually adjust the incline.

Most of the workouts in Wahoo SYSTM do adjust the incline automatically and it makes for a very cool, impressive experience.

It seemed to me that shifting in a bigger gear did change the flywheel speed on the Kickr Bike in ERG. However after playing with it for a bit I found it took a lot longer for it to “settle in” to changes in power with the higher flywheel speed, so I get it at 1-3 which works really well and is super-responsive when changes in power happen during the workout in ERG.

It’s physically impossible for the flywheel speed on the Kickr Bike to change from “shifting” alone. It is a fixed drive ratio between the cranks to flywheel. The only way flywheel speed actually changes is as a direct result to changes in rider cadence at the pedals.

There may be some peripheral changes in feel via “shifting” and how Wahoo may be manipulating ERG responses, but the actual flywheel speed is always set per cadence.

That makes total sense. After years of a road bike on trainers had to wrap my head around the whole fixed drive ratio with the Kickr Bike.

It is interesting how differently it responds in ERG if you do shift gears. I guess the take home is simply - “Don’t shift”.

Unfortunately have to return my Kickr Bike V1. They offered to replace it but I’ve decided to just go for the refund for a couple reasons.

The issue I was getting was with the tilt button. If I had the bike in lock mode (doesn’t respond to Zwift signals, I control the tilt), whenever I pushed the tilt button, the bike would have a “mini reset” as I called it. The tilt change would stop and the bike would reset the resistance and gearing, causing me to spin out. So not only could I not change the tilt at all, but anytime I would press the button, it would reset the resistance and I’d spin out; very frustrating in the middle of a workout. I tried resetting the bike and updated all the firmware but nothing fixed it, which is why they offered a replacement.

The decision to take the refund rather than the replacement was a few things. The bike was awesome when in worked, but I realized it was a “want” way more than a “need.” I have a perfectly functioning Kickr (V5 I think? One model previous from the new one just released) that has been solid since I bought it. So it’s not like I was starting from scratch or needed a new trainer to replace a broken one. I just saw the price drop of the Bike and thought it would be cool to have. But for the price and my needs, it didn’t fit.

The tilt function was fun, but didn’t work during workouts and became more of a gimmick than anything necessary. It was cool to do Alpe du Zwift and have it tilt back, but I found myself not using it for most rides and not touching it for workouts.

The other reason I bought it was to keep my road bike free and ready to go if I wanted to ride outside. Which is really nice, but only really matters in the Spring and Fall. During the Winter, I’m 100% on the indoor trainer, and during the Summer I’m 95% outside. So while there are times I have the bike on the trainer and want to ride outside, or vice versa having to put the bike on to the trainer, it’s not very often. Plus, now I have my CX bike that will live on the trainer in the offseason and I can have my road bike always ready to go.

One last reason I convinced myself I was going to utilize was the ease of changing my fit. I thought I could try out different crank lengths or change my stack/reach in seconds and could try different positions. But in reality, I like my bike fit so there’s really no reason to change it.

So overall, I did think the bike was awesome when it worked. It was way quieter than the bike on trainer (I had to get used to the drivetrain noise again, and I keep it quite clean IMO). Though it did suffer from a weird sound at/around my preferred cadence of 95. It was nice having a dedicated trainer setup that never changed. But there are way better things I could spend $2500 on (or just save it), that in the end, I’m happy to return it for a refund and go back to my Kickr.

Sorry to hear that, but I guess good for you! I just got one shortly after you did. Mine doesn’t seem to suffer from the same issue. When I unlock it seems to start functioning as expected. I don’t use it for “workouts” because I was pretty sure since I let TR control the trainer during a workout that the tilt wouldn’t work whether locked or unlocked as Zwift is not providing the feedback, TR is. However, for the pace partner rides or just riding along, I do find it’s a fun feature. Anyways, glad you are at piece with it. I’m sure you’ll love your kickr even more now.

TR sends tilt signals. If there are large power changes it will change tilt. I like that feature, because it changes my position slightly which improves comfort for me.

It does?! I wasn’t aware of this—thanks for the heads up!

I just got my Kickr v1 bike this week and have done two TR rides on it (so far, so good). I’ve had tilt function locked out as I didn’t think TR applied tilt. I’ll unlock and test it out soon.

Thanks again.

I really don’t think it does but would love to hear otherwise.

Here is the info on the separate Climb unit. I have heard mix comments on whether it works on the Kickr Bike.

Definitely works on the bike - I had it on this morning. Level of tilt is proportional to % of FDP

So all you need to do is turn off the tilt lock?

Any other settings in TR?

Just the tilt lock as far as I can remember

Are you saying that works for the kickr bike? I heard someone say that was only on the kickr climb
